Opening Doors
to Creativity
Author Chris Rogers will be signing her book Bitch Factor
Factor at the College Station Hastings from 5 to 7 p.m. on
Although college should ideally
be a time of productivity and cre
ativity for students, the heat of
stress, deadlines and forced cre
ativity so often burns off the juices
that make creativity flow.
Chris Rogers, who has just
completed her fifth novel Bitch
Factor, a mystery thriller set in her
hometown of Houston, finds her
self confronting the frustrations of
the creative process on a regular
basis.
In 1982 Rogers developed her
own personal method of creativity
called ISP, which stands for inspi
ration, sensualization and perspi
ration.
"The formula is not only about
creativity, but about getting the
life you really want,” Rogers said.
For the first step, “inspiration,"
Rogers said she periodically
makes a list of all the things she
wants in her life and all the things
she does not want, as if she only
had six months to live.
“I list all the things I want,
regardless of sense, like eating ice
cream every morning when I wake
up,” Rogers said. “You have to
find out what is important to you
and figure out what you are will
ing to do or give up in order to get
them.”
Roger’s second step is “sensu
alization,” where she internalizes
her inspirations in order to realize
her dreams and convey her feel
ings to others in her writing.
“You have to be able to feel,
hear, see and taste those moments
that inspire you,” Rogers said.
“Visualize your ideal day, drawing
from the things on your list, over
and over until you can hear the
music and people murmuring in
the background.”
Rogers said she believes the
emotional mind doesn’t distin
guish between truth and fiction.
“If the mind can see it, then the
mind will start to believe it,”
Rogers said. “When your subcon
scious believes in your dreams, it
will do things to make them hap
pen.”
Rogers said one must still make
a conscious effort to acquire what
they want, but aligning the sub
conscious mind with one’s actions
will often solve situations of con
flict within the mind that people
don’t realize are there.
“Internalizing those dreams
and inspirations will also help you
take your experiences and turn
them into words, to make the
reader feel those sensations,”
Rogers said.
Rogers’ book Bitch Factor fol
lows the exploits of Houston
bounty hunter Dixie Flannigan,
and although Rogers doesn’t carry
a gun or track down criminals, she
draws on prior experiences to
make the situations she writes
about seem real to the reader.
“I have to know how Dixie feels,
so I draw on the times I have felt
fear — I go back and relive those
experiences to be able to put them
on the page.
The third step, “perspiration,
is often where people fail.
“There are no free rides-you
have to take actions every day. You
have to have a plan,” Rogers said.
“There are people who want to
write a book, and then five years
later they still haven’t done any
thing. You have to sit down and
write to make it happen. Write a
page a day, and in a year you’ll
have a book.”
Houston-based author Chris
Rogers will be at the Colleg;
Station Hastings on Saturto
sign her latest book B/tcfifa:

John Fogerty, God bless him,
sure wrote some mighty fine songs
in his Creedence Clearwater
Revival days and solo career —
"Have You Ever Seen the Rain,”
"Down on the Corner,”
"Centerfield,” “Bad Moon Rising,”
“Proud Mary,” the list goes on and

batch of them live in concert. But
despite all his songwriting talent, Fogerty really falls short'
comes to live performance. Namely, all his songs sound exai

this is no exception. Even the potentially bombastic “Who'll S
