Believed to be the first quintuplets in Dallas since 1975, the four boys and a girl were born Monday to Mrs. Zuniga, 30, of Arlington. The births took four minutes. "It was too fast," her husband, Victor Zuniga, told The Dallas Morning News through a translator. "I thought it would take longer." The babies, born 10 weeks premature, all weighed in at less than 3 pounds but were healthy, said Park land Hospital officials. Mrs. Zuniga was tired but otherwise healthy, said doctors who planned to release her from the hospi tal in four to five days. The infants are in critical condition today at Park land's neonatal intensive care unit. Daughter Alexa is now on a respirator and three of the boys are getting extra oxygen at Parkland's inten sive care unit, said Dr. Charles Rosenfeld, a professor of pediatrics and obstetrics-gynecology at the Univer sity of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. "They're in good shape and expected to do well," Rosenfeld said, adding that the next 96 hours will be critical to monitoring the infants' breathing. Babies born this early have a 90 percent survival rate, he said. The firstborn, Edgar, weighed 2 pounds, 11.5 ounces upon arrival at 3:1 7 p.m. the hospital said. He was followed by Aldo (2 pounds, 12.3 ounces) at 3:17 p.m., Diego (2 pounds, 4 ounces) at 3:18 p.m., Alexa (2 pounds, 12.5 ounces) at 3:19 p.m. and Ivan (2 pounds, 15 ounces) at 3:20 p.m. Diego was the only child who did not require help breathing, doctors said. "He's the strong one, but he's also the littlest one," said Dr. Ron Ramus, who delivered the children. Zuniga said he was ecstatic about his instant fam ily, but added that he's finished having children. "No more babies," he said, adding that he has a one-bedroom apartment. His wife was awake throughout the deliveries, Ramus said. "I think she was relieved the end was near," he said. The Zuniga quintuplets will likely spend the next six to eight weeks in Parkland's neonatal intensive care unit at a cost of more than $1,000 perch day, the newspaper said. They were conceived by in vitro fertilization weeks ago, spokeswoman Audrey Reed Grange' The hospital said the Zunigas had beenti conceive naturally for four years before fertility treatment. Mrs. Zuniga has been at the hospital since^ 1 9, when she was admitted for treatmento//)// 1 tension. Otherwise, doctors called theprajt®] uneventful, but more than 40 personnelonh for the deliveries. The only other set of quintuplets everbornin Dallas-Fort Worth area were delivered on |uly 1975, at Parkland, the hospital said.
