miserables Skodceh
Continued from Page 3
The story picks up years later
withValjean now a rich man and
the benevolent mayor of one of
France’s most progressive towns.
Valjean is pursued by Javert
(Rush), a police inspector who
maintains his society’s prevailing
view: that a criminal can never
change into an honest man.
Over the next 10 years, Javert
pursues Valjean relentlessly,
which leads bo til men into Paris
and through a revolt against the
hypocrisy of the ruling class.
The movie also deals with Val-
jean’s attempts at atonement by
helping the poor of Paris and in
particular raising the daughter of
a woman he carelessly forced into
a life of prostitution.
The movie carries us swiftly
through the social and political
conditions in repressive France.
The two-plus hours of drama
centers on the profound efforts
of a man to devote his life to
simple charity.
Neeson’s hulking stature and
asperous face are put to effective
use to illustrate a man beaten
down by society who attempts
to find mercy for his enemies.
This is one of many epics for
Neeson, including Rob Roy and
Michael Collins.
Since winning the Oscar for his
performance in Shine, Rush has ap
parently been working diligently on
the nasty sneer he has perfected for
the role of Javert. Rush is rigid and
dour as the policeman who loses
his sense of morality by following
the letter of the law too closely.
In smaller roles, dramatic per
formances by Thurman and
Danes represent the tragic and
hopeful sides of the novel.
Les Miserables is pleasant to
look at, with much in the way of
stirring music, detailed costumes,
dreamy countryside, intense
close-ups and lovely period detail.
It is a richly appointed epic, not of
war but of the battle for social jus
tice and the souls of men.

However, the pull of family
and friends on Jesus to make a
career decision seems real.
He Got Game is one the
stronger movies to come out
lately. It wouldn’t be surprising
to see Lee and Washington vy
ing for Oscar nods next year.
