NBC network recreates
Long Island incident
NEW YORK (AP) — Barbra
Streisand was on the line. She
was producing a TV movie
about Carolyn McCarthy,
whose husband was shot to
death on the Long Island Rail
Road, and she didn’t like the
way it was turning out.
Streisand, one of
Hollywood’s most notorious
nitpickers, complained
about the movie’s thematic
flow. She didn’t think it had
much. McCarthy didn’t want
to hear about it.
“I said, ‘Go listen to some
music. The flow will be fine,”'
McCarthy recalled several
months later.
Entertainment royalty
obviously means little to
McCarthy. She didn’t evolve
from a grieving housewife to a
dogged anti-gun activist to
Congresswoman by meekly
accepting anything whatever
she was told.
So you can be certain that
when NBC airs ‘‘The Long
Island Incident” Sunday at 9
p.m. EDT, the Carolyn
McCarthy story it tells is
Carolyn McCarthy’s story.
Her life changed forever on
Dec. 7, 1993, when Colin
Ferguson opened fire with a
semi-automatic handgun
aboard the commuter train.
McCarthy’s husband, Dennis,
was one of six people killed.
Her son, Kevin, was seriously
wounded.
Reluctant at first to get
politically involved, McCarthy
was finally prodded into lob
bying Congress for gun con
trol. She was so angry when
her congressman, Daniel
Frisa, voted to repeal a gun
law that she took him on in the
1996 election and won.
Dozens of people contact
ed McCarthy about a movie.
She rejected them all because
she wanted no depiction of
the pivotal event — Ferguson
striding down a train aisle,
methodically shooting people.
McCarthy threatened to
sue when NBC decided it was
going ahead anyway. But she
was heartened by Streisand’s
participation, figuring the
celebrity would be sensitive to
privacy concerns. McCarthy
relented when producers
offered her a chance to con
sult on the script.
“When they said they were
looking for an inspirational
story, I became a lot more
comfortable with it,” said
McCarthy. She says she is so
pleased with the finished
product that she is giving
interviews to promote it.

Father charged with murdering
daughter after Internet confession
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Pleas for help and con
fessions of wrongdoing aren’t out of the ordinary in
an online support group for problem drinkers.
But these messages stood out.
They contained a detailed confession from a
man who said he got ‘‘wickedly drunk” and killed
his 5-year-old daughter by setting fire to his house,
then acted like the sorrowful father who bravely
tried to save her.
To some, the reaction of other support group
members — many of whom did not notify police
and criticized those who eventually had the man
arrested — was even more disturbing than the con
fession. The case has set off a debate about the con
fidentiality of online support groups, where some
members may assume that the intimate stories
they send over the Internet are private.
Police arrested Larrry Froistad, a San Diego
computer programmer, on March 27 and charged
him with murdering his daughter in 1995 in
Bowman, N.D., where Froistad had lived.
Police said Froistad, 29, called and confessed
after learning that support group members had
notified authorities about his postings.
The message that started it all was a rambling
note from a user known as ‘‘Ifroistl.” The posting,
sent at 6:09 a.m. on March 22, was about people he
had lost in his life.
‘‘Amanda I murdered because her mother stood
between us,” it said.
