David Robinson and Tim Duncan. Avet^ Johnson continued his sizzling playoff run wuh a career-high 30 points, and Chuck Person’s 3-point shooting helped ignite a decisive second-haU surge as the Spurs defeated Phoenix 99-80 Wednesday night to win their opening- round series 3-\. lohnson and Person came through on a night when San Antonio stars Robinson and Duncan strug gled early against double-teams. “We couldn t get anything going until Avery and Chuck stepped up, saj^ Robinson, who fin ished with 15 points and 21 rebounds but shot only 3-of_t2 from the field. Duncan, the NBA’s rookie oi the year, had only 11 points and five rebounds for the Spurs, who pulled away from a 50-50 tie late in the third quarter. But Johnson, who averaged 20 points in the series after scoring only 10 per game in the regular season, scored nine during a 29-6 surge that put the Spurs up 79-56 with 6:53 left. “They are a dangerous team, and I didn’t want to go back to Phoenix, even if they do have a nice restaurant connected to the hotel,” Johnson said. Person, who averaged only 6.7 points during the regular season, hit three 3-pointers during the key run and finished with 18 points. Overall, he was 6-of- 8 from 3-point range. “Obviously, I’ve slowed down a lot because my back has been a problem,” said Person, referring to back surgery he had 18 months ago. “But coach has been limiting my minutes, and I was fresh tonight.” The Spurs led by only seven points entering the Robinson fourth quarter, but they opened the final period with a 17-1 run to break the game open. “We had a good season, but we should have been more competitive in this series,” said Suns guard Jason Kidd, who finished with 12 points. With the Suns trailing 81- 57 with 5:06 remaining, Phoenix guard Steve Nash committed a hard foul on Johnson, who then walked up to Nash and bumped chests. Players from both teams then started pushing and shoving each other before they were separated. Johnson, Duncan and Antonio McDyess of the Suns each got technical fouls. Kevin Johnson led the Suns with 18 points. Nash, who started in place of injured Rex Chapman, fin ished with 13 points on 4-of-13 shooting. “Going into the season, if you would have told me that we would be the fourth seed for the playoffs, I would have been very pleased,” Suns coach Danny Ainge said. “Unfortunately, we didn’t play well against the Spurs.” San Antonio will play the winner of the Utah- Houston series in the second round. Kevin Johnson hit a 3-pointer with 29 seconds left in the third period, but Robinson then scored inside for the Spurs and Person opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer as the Spurs took a 65-55 lead with 11:40 left. Person hit a 3-pointer from the corner with 3:23 left in the third period and Johnson then hit consec utive baskets before Person sank another 3 to put the Spurs ahead 60-52 with 37 seconds remaining in the quarter. Van Gundy announces Ewing will be held out in first-round series games against Miami Heat NEW YORK (AP) — Patrick Ewing will not, repeat, will not be playing for the New York Knicks as they face elimination by the Miami Heat. Not in Game 4 and not in Game 5, according to the Knicks. “Again, I don’t know how much I can say this: He’s not play ing in this series. I'm not sure why no one will accept that answer,” coach Jeff Van Gundy said Wednesday after the Knicks went through what might have been their final practice of the season on the eve of Thursday night’s Game 4. Ewing, who severely fractured his right wrist in late December, has been practicing with the team but has not been given clearance to play by the team’s medical staff. The Knicks have been insisting for almost two weeks that Ewing will not be available for the first round, yet fans have kept their hopes up, perhaps wishing for a Van Gundy recreated Willis Reed moment. Reed provided the franchise with perhaps its most memorable moment by hobbling out of the tunnel for the start of Game 7 of the 1970 NBA Finals and scoring the first two baskets, spurring the Knicks to the championship. Before this first-round series began, even Miami coach Pat Riley said he expected Ewing to play. He acknowledged Wednesday that a return by Ewing is “unlikely, but you’ve got to be ready for it.” Ewing offered no comment Wednesday other than to say: “Ask Dr. Scott.” That would be team physician Dr. Norman Scott, who has said he won’t clear Ewing to play until he has regained nearly 100 per cent of his strength and range of motion, making it look to some like the Knicks are more interest ed in protecting their $68 million investment than winning. “The doctors have the best interests of the player at heart, so I don’t know about any conspiracy to save money,” Van Gundy said. “We don’t want him to fall on that wrist and re-injure it so that he couldn’t play next year,” forward Buck Williams said. “Once he can handle a fall, I’m sure he’ll play.” As far as Van Gundy is con cerned, what the Knicks really need is someone coming out of the tun nel who can defend Voshon Lenard. The Miami shooting guard scored 25 and 28 points in Games 2 and 3, respectively, negating New York’s ability to limit the production of Alonzo Mourning and Tim Hardaway. “There’s only one two-guard that’s ever hurt us in back-to-back games as much as Voshon Lenard did, and that’s Michael Jordan,” Van Gundy said. “Reggie Miller? Never two games in a row. But this guy, two games in a row he’s looked us square in the eye and said, TT1 take any one of you any time I want,’ and he has.” Van Gundy also needs his entire team to come out of the tunnel and play tough defense and intelli gent offense, unlike Game 3 when they blew numerous opportunities down the stretch to reduce their deficit below four points. The Knicks’ No. 1 offensive option, Allan Houston, scored 18 points in the first quarter, but shot 0-for-6 in a scoreless fourth. Aggie Sports Briefs Cass from staff and wire reports Big 12 selections include Ag coach The Texas A&M Tennis Team dominated the All-Big 12 selec tions named Wednesday by the League, as five tennis players and Coach Tim Cass were named to the team. Cass shared the coach of the year award with Baylor Coach Matt Knoll after taking the Aggie netters from sev enth in confer ence last season to second this year. Cass also led A&M to the school’s first-ever confer ence tournament championships last weekend as the Aggies pummeled fifth ranked Texas, 4-0 to increase the team’s overall record to 17-4. Rafael de Mesa was named the Big 12 freshman of the year after compiling a 7-1 record in singles and a spotless 8-0 mark in doubles; he holds the number one singles position for the Aggies and is ranked 37th nationally. Shuon Madden and Carlos Tori also made the all-league singles list, as Madden put up a 16-3 mark on the season and Tori led the team with a 24-9 overall record. Madden and Tori were also named to the team as doubles partners by rack ing up a 10-6 overall record. Lisa Dingwall and Vanessa Rooks were named as a doubles pair on the ladies’ side, posting an 11-9 overall mark. Both teams are awaiting word from the NCAA as to where they will head for regional action. Aggies get high Trackwire rating Texas A&M’s track and field teams are in a solid position, according to the latest Trackwire rankings. The rankings, which pre dict scoring at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, have the Aggie women at 11th and predicted to score 20 points, while the A&M men are in the 23rd spot and are forecast to score 10 points. In the power rankings, Esther Eisenlauer is ranked 2nd in the javelin and Adrien Sawyer holds down fourth place in the 100-meter hurdle rankings. For the men, Senior Larry Wade is ranked 1st in the 110-meter high hurdles. Wade Jon Hart Graduation Sale • April I 7 Thru AAay 18, 1998 Sale Items #560 Daytripper Regular $128.
