Ex-cadet enters plea of innocence
FORT WORTH(AP) — A former
Air Force Academy cadet accused
of killing an ex-lover at his girl
friend’s request will proceed to tri
al after pleading innocent to capi
tal murder charges Monday.
But David Graham’s attorneys
said they are confident state Dis
trict Judge Don Leonard will
grant their request to move the
trial away from Fort Worth and
the publicity surrounding Febru
ary’s trial of former girlfriend Di
ane Zamora.
“The publicity involved in this
case is above and beyond other
high-profile trials that I have ob
served recently,” said Dan Cogdell,
Graham’s lead attorney.
“It would be impossible to find
people in Fort Worth who haven’t
heard important details about
this case.”
Leonard also is expected to
rule this week on the move to ex
clude Graham’s confession, as
well as about a dozen other mo-
cc WItliout the confession,
their (prosecutors’)
case falls apart.”

tions defense attorneys filed at a
pretrial hearing.
On Tuesday, Leonard is sched
uled to hear arguments on the ad
missibility of various pieces of ev
idence, including a gun taken
from Graham’s home.
Police believe the weapon was
used in Jones’ slaying.
The trial is scheduled to begin
July 6.
Cogdell said he expects Leonard
to rule Graham’s written confes
sion inadmissible in his trial.
“It is our position that David
was unlawfully arrested and any
statement he made should be
void," Cogdell said.
“He was denied counsel and he
was denied a request that the in
terview cease.
“Without the confession, their
(prosecutors’) case falls apart,” he
said. “That is the heart of their case.”
The motion states Air Force
Academy authorities and Grand
Prairie police detained Graham for
12 hours during questioning and
denied his requests for an attorney
during the interview at the Col
orado Springs, Colo., academy.
In his motion to suppress,
Cogdell alleges detectives threat
ened Graham into confessing.
In February, Zamora was sen
tenced to life imprisonment after
she was convicted of capital murder.

AUSTIN (AP)
— Gov. George
W Bush, re
maining coy
about any presi
dential aspira

California and
Arizona this
week to raise
campaign cash
for himself and a
fellow Republicans.
Bush insisted Monday he is only
helping some friends, with a little
state business thrown in. No one
should see any national implica
tions in the trip, he said.
“I’m not running for anything in
California. I’m running for governor
of Texas," he said.
“I don’t know whether I will or
will not seek the presidency. I do
know my head and heart’s here in
Texas, and I intend to be the First
governor elected to back-to-back
four year terms.”
Democrats demanded that Bush
give voters “a straight answer” on
his plans for 2000.
“Gov. Bush is traveling to Califor
nia and Arizona this week on a polit
ical trip designed to raise money and
raise his profile for the 2000 presi
dential race,” said Texas Democratic
Party spokesperson Rafe Bemporad.
“Bush should explain why he is
hobnobbing with I lollywood stars
and political elites rather than at
tending to the needs of Texans,” Be
mporad said.
Bush will be in California from
Wednesday through Saturday,
said campaign spokesperson
Mindy Tucker.
While in the nation’s largest state,
Bush will attend a fund-raising din
ner for California GOP gubernator
ial candidate Dan Lungren, a fund

National Committee, fund-raising

South Park paraphernalia gets expelled from elementary schoi
w
PLANO(AP) — An elementary
school has banned T-shirts and
hats advertising the animated ca
ble TV show “South Park” after a
counselor’s concern about violence
on the program.
The clothing, Thomas Ele
mentary School administrators
say, is a violation of their dress
code. They’ve sent a warning
home to parents about the
show and the paraphernalia it
has inspired.
Thomas Elementary counselor
Elaine Sample said she became
concerned about the cartoon’s vio
lent content after two boys alleged
ly shot and killed a teacher and four
classmates last month at a Jones
boro, Aik., middle school.
“I brought it to the attention of
the principal, the staff and we de
duced wearing the T-shirts was in
violation of the dress code, which
states that items with provocative,
offensive, violent or drug-related
pictures or slogans will not be per
mitted,” Sample told the Plano
Star Courier.
Airing on the late-night Com
edy Central cable channel,
“South Park” features four foul-
mouthed 8-year-olds who fre
quently curse, pass gas and make
crude jokes.
Kenny, one of the show’s chil
dren, dies a violent death each
week and then comes back to life
for the next episode.
A cultural phenomenon among
both children and adults, the show
has spawned hundreds ofWeb sites
and a video game. It’s been featured
in the cover of Newsweek, Spin and
Rolling Stone magazines.
