Texas A&M Women's Tennis Team proves no match for No. 5 Texas Longhogwj
By Katie Mish
Staff writer
The Texas A&M Women’s Tennis Team fell
to the No.5 Texas Longhorns last night by a
score of 8-1 at the Omar Smith Tennis Center.
The Aggies played hard, although the final
score does not reflect their play. Coach Bob
Kleinecke said the team had lots of chances
but just could not capitalize on them.
“They’re a great team, but I felt like it was
a heck of a lot closer than 8-1,” Kleinecke said.
“We had plenty of opportunities in the match
to win more sets, we just made errors at the
wrong time.”
Freshman netter Eva Marcial was the only
Lady Ag to win a match, defeating Texas play
er Nomena Rasolomalah in singles play by a
score of 6-2,6-3.
Marcial said it was a bittersweet win for
her because everyone else on the team want
ed to win as much as she did and everyone
worked just as hard.
“It was close all the way down the line,”
Marcial said. “It’s hard, because you want the
rest of tlie team to feel what you’re feeling also.”
Kleinecke said Marcial played well and it
was good for her to get out there and play
without being intimidated.
“I can tell you this, she didn’t make many er
rors,” Kleinecke said. “You don’t beat that girl
(Rasolomalah) with making errors. She makes
you hit a lot of balls, Eva had to stay out there
and hit a lot of balls with her. For a freshman to
come out there and do that is really impressive.”
In doubles play, the Aggie pairing of se
nior Vanessa Rooks and sophomore Lisa
Dingwall were defeated by Moros and
Sureephong ofTexas 8-1, but hit some tough
shots to keep it interesting.
Marcial and sophomore Kathryn Scott
played hard against Texas partners Fauder and
Walker, taking most of the games to deuce, but
falling to Texas by a score of 8-4.
Senior Monica Rebolledo and junior Mon
ica San Miguel played the closest doubles
match of the night, going ahead ofTexas play
ers Berendt and Pastor by a score of 7-5, but lost
in a tough tie breaker by a finals.•
