Maybe that is not the way the poem goes, but that is what happened Hxesday night at Olsen Field as Texas A&M pitcher Casey Possum stmek out Rice slugger Bubba Crosby to seal a 10-9 comeback win over the Rice Owls in one of the more exciting Aggie base ball games in recent memory. With the win, the No. 14 Texas A&M Baseball Team improved its overall record to 32-13 (14-7 in conference). The Owls fall to 31-14 with the loss. The Aggies spotted Rice a 9-0 lead after five innings. Crosby start ed the scoring with a solo home run off Aggie pitcher Matt Ward with two outs in the first inning. Crosby was named the Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week last week when he hit eight home runs with 20 RBI in four games. With his solo shot in the first, Crosby extended his streak of con secutive games with a home run. Crosby’s streak now stands at five games. Rice scored three runs off of four hits in the second and Ward had to leave the game with two outs in the inning because of a sore arm. Sophomore righthander Chance Caple ended the inning by getting Johnson Rice third baseman Kevin Llodge to ground out to second base. Caple ran into trouble in the third when he faced five Rice batters and got none of them out. Rice scored four runs in the third on three hits, a walk and a home run. Mark John son called on freshman pitch er Chris Russ to cool the Owls’ bats. Russ responded in a big way as he retired 15 of the next 16 Rice bat ters. Russ gave up one run on a home run in five innings of relief. Down 9-0 in the sixth, the Aggies’ bats responded. In the next two in nings the Aggies scored 10 runs off of 10 hits including four home runs. Junior third baseman Craig Kuzmic lead the rally with home runs in both the sixth and the sev enth inning. Kuzmic became the first Aggie in recent memory to hit a home run from both sides of the plate in the same game. Senior stopper Eric French came on in the eighth and retired the next five Owls he faced. With two outs and one man on first, Possum struck out Crosby to end the game. Despite Russ’ relative inactivity during the season, Coach Mark Johnson said he was not surprised by Russ’ performance. “We had a simulated game last week and he (Russ) threw great,” Johnson said. “He really moved up the ladder past some people. At Ne braska last weekend he threw better than anyone in the bullpen so we knew he was throwing well.” Johnson credited Kuzmic with jump starting the Aggie offense. “Kuzmic hit a blast. It was only one run, but it was a big hit over the center field wall, and sometimes that type of hit makes a pitcher think,” Johnson said. “Hitting is contagious, and once a few people start hitting, the whole team gets excited and the opposing pitchers start to get nervous and the momentum just snowballs.” Kuzmic said this win came down to total team performance. “We thought we were going to win, and we all came out as a team and got it done,” Kuzmic said. “We refused to lose, and we came out re laxed and I think that helped us play better. We were just hoping to get a few nans here and there, and the next tiling you know we were ahead.” Russ was credited with the win and moved his record to 1-0. Pos sum picked up the save, his first of the season. ROBERT MCKAY/The Battalion Aggie first baseman John Scheschuk makes one of the few routine outs in last night’s wild 10-9 affair with the No. 13 Rice University Owls. Rooks, Dingwall quite a pair; Rebolledo walking on air tfie Tenivis ♦Katie The Aggies are gearing up for the Big 12 Tournament that will be held in Lincoln, Neb. Hopefully, the next two matches against conference rivals Texas and Kansas will provide insight into the competition that lies up ahead. At the least, it gives us sportswriters something to mull over. Rebolledo Rules Senior netter Monica Rebolledo joined the ranks of some fellow Aggies last Thurs day with her defeat of Texas Christian’s Daria Zoldakova 6-2, 6-2. With the singles win, Rebolledo reached 92 career singles win, tying the all-time Aggie record. Rebolledo shares the record with former students Nancy Dingwall and Lynn Staley. Rebolledo is in position to surpass the record, with two Big 12 matches this week against Texas and Kansas. Two of a kind The Aggie pairing of Senior Vanessa Rooks and Sophomore Lisa Dingwall in doubles play is starting to look unstoppable. The partners are on a five- game winning streak and looking stronger than ever. Rooks and Dingwall pulled out a come-from- behind win on Thursday against Texas Christian’s Natalie Balafoutis and Rachel Niwa, winning by a score of 9-7 after being down 5-7. This doubles match helped the Aggies win Thursday’s match with TCU by a score of 5-4. Freshman Eva Marcial and Sophomore Dingwall Kathiyn Scott also came on strong in their doubles match against TCU’s Jessica Kjell- gren and Daria Zoldakova, taking the match by a score of 8-4.
