American Kennel Club recalls new book over controversy

Continued from Pagifl —
NEW YORK (AP) — The Ameri
can Kennel Club is recalling the lat
est edition of its bible, “The Com
plete Dog Book,” after pet owners
objected that some of the nation’s
most popular breeds were listed as
not good with children.
Scotties, Dalmatians, Yorkshire
terriers, Rottweilers, dachshunds
and 35 other breeds were deemed
unsuitable for kids in the recently
released 19th edition of a book
that has sold more than 2 million
copies since first being published
in 1929.
Within days, breeders and owners
complained that the new classifica
tions were unfair and uninformed.
The Kennel Club quickly re
called the $33 book and said it
would be reissued. Sam Perry, a
vice president and general counsel
for the club, on Wednesday refused
to discuss what revisions would be
made or how the new classifica
tions were determined.
The Chicago Tribune, however,
reported that the club was recalling
the entire 30,000 first printing and
eliminating the new feature that
has caused the uproar: boxes that
mark breeds as excellent, good or
not good.
“The information certainly was
not supplied by anyone who evi
dently knew what they were talking
about,” said Patty Brooks of Straf
ford, Mo., whose husband, Fred, is
a breeder and president of the Scot
tish Terriers Club of America.
The list includes Chihuahuas,
toy poodles and whippets, while
breeds with more dangerous repu
tations, like the American pit bull,
are listed as good with children.
