Ihe Texas A&M Women’s Tennis Team had better concentrate on their upcom ing match with TCU before facing archrival Texas next Wednesday. Tearin’ up Texas The Aggies lost for the eighth time this spring on Saturday to Vanderbilt. The Lady Ags seem to have the most trouble with teams outside Texas. All the Aggie losses this spring have been to out-of-state teams, with the exception of Baylor, who the Aggies lost to in a close 4-5 match at the beginning of the season. However, the Ags have a good record over all at 14-8, and their complete record for out- of-state teams this spring is a respectable 6-9. Magnificent Monica Texas A&M’s Monica Robelledo has played great tennis this spring and was awarded Big 12 Player of the Week for the week ending March 29. Robelledo is 9-0 in Big 12 play and 21-5 overall. Robelledo is a senior on the Texas A&M team and a two-time conference cham pion. With her win against Middle Tennessee State’s AlexTolelle, Robelledo is one win shy of tying the A&M record for career singles wins. NCAA's Up Ahead The Aggies play Texas Christian University Thursday in Fort Worth before finishing up the season and Big 12 Conference play on April 15 and 18. Texas and Kansas will be the opponents then in College Station at the Omar Smith Tennis Center. The TCU Horned Frogs are ranked No. 23 overall and could be a match that helps to decide the fate of the Aggies’ seeding in the NCAA regional tournament at Louisiana State University May 15-17. The Aggies are 7-1 against the NCAA Southwest Region. Katie Mish is a senior journalism major Evans garners Arizona State coaching job TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Rob Evans was hired today as basketball coach at Arizona State, intent on reviving the Sun Devils as he did in rebuilding Mississippi into a Southeastern Conference power. Evans replaces Don Newman, who took over as interim coach after Bill Frieder resigned under pressure last September. Arizona State had wanted to hire Rick Majerus, but the Utah coach rejected a reported $1 million offer last week. Evans is a native of Hobbs, N.M., where his parents still live, and he wanted to return to this part of the country. “We have a tremendous base to build on with the Phoenix area and this is a program that should aspire to be among the best in the Pacific-10 Conference and the nation,” Evans said at a campus news conference. Evans and Arizona State athletic director Kevin White agreed to contract terms over the weekend and Evans returned to Oxford, Miss., to tell his players before catching an early flight back to Arizona. “He said they really didn’t react one way or the other,” Ole Miss athletic direc- This is a program that should aspire to be among the best in the ... nation.” Rob Evans ASU Basketball Coach tor Pete Boone said of Evans’ meeting with the players. When Boone asked Evans about the over riding factor in his decision, the coach told him “it was just a gut feeling and probably the location as much as anything.” Newman took over a 10-20 team with only eight scholarship players and the Sun Devils finished this season at 18-14 with an NIT bid, developing a devoted following among Sun Devils boosters. But White was after a bigger name, starting with Majerus. After Majerus spurned Arizona State last Tuesday, White and a search com mittee met with Evans. At Ole Miss, he coached junior guard Michael White, Kevin White’s son. “The key thing about Rob Evans is that Kevin White feels very, very comfortable with him,” said Frieder, who remains close to the basketball program. “You know, Kevin has known him for a long time. Kevin’s son was recruited by Rob, and so that gave Kevin a lot of time to observe, evaluate and develop a friendship with Rob. “He’s seen what Rob has done rebuilding the Mississippi program.” Valparaiso upset Ole Miss 70-69 in the first round of the Midwest Regional this season. Evans was an assistant for 15 years at Texas Tech and for two years at Oklahoma State before arriving at Mississippi in 1992. ; s 3.95 « pager airtime Free Activation ‘Accessories ‘Calling Cards Aerial phones sold here Discount Paging I System M "...audiences cannot help but laugh uncontrollable."
