Aggie Sports Briefs
from staff and wire reports
Aggies host SHSU Men finish strong
in Olsen rematch at U.S. Collegiate
After a weekend road trip to Iowa
State which saw A&M take two of
three from the Cyclones, the Aggies
return to Olsen Field Tuesday at 7
p.m. against Sam Flouston State.
The wins over the Cyclones
made the Aggies’ conference
record 12-6 and upped their over
all mark to 29-11. The victories
also kept A&M ranked eleventh in
the Baseball America poll.
Despite an overall record of 18-
19, Sam Flouston State will be look
ing to take its second win from the
Aggies this season. The Bearkats
won 10-7 Feb. 24 in Fluntsville
behind three shutout innings of
relief from Jonathan Fiarraird.
Courtney Weller took the loss for
A&M. The loss for the Aggies made
their all-time record against Sam
Flouston State 60-32-1.
Chris Fulbright will get the ball for
A&M in the rematch. Fulbright is 1-1
on the season, with a 5.40 ERA, 10
strikeouts and 6 walks. Mark
Johnson needs one more win to tally
600 wins in 14 years as head coach.
Johnson trails only Tom Chandler,
who he served under as an assis
tant, in wins by an Aggie head coach.
Chandler amassed 660 victories in
26 seasons at the helm of A&M.
While the Texas A&M Baseball
Team will be trying to give Johnson
his 600th decision, Aggie fans will
be treated to 25-Cent Flot Dog Night.
The Texas A&M Men’s Golf
Team found their comfort zone in
the U.S. Collegiate Championships
on Sunday and fired an even-par
final round of 288 which was the
best of the day. The team finished
eighth overall in the tournament
and was 32 strokes behind cham
pion Florida State.
Miguel del Angel led A&M with
rounds of 75-75-70=220 to finish
tied for 15th place. Five Aggie golfers
placed in the top 50 golfers overall.
The Aggies will compete in the
MacGregor Downs Intercollegiate in
Cary, N.C., before heading to the Big
12 Championships April 27 to 28 in
Flutchinson, Kan.
ASU/PING sends
women to eighth
The llth-ranked Texas A&M
Women’s Golf Team finished in
eighth place on Sunday at the Arizona
State/PING Invitational. The Aggies
finished 60 strokes behind champion
No. 8 Stanford. Texas A&M finished
ahead of three ranked teams.
Senior Jamie Flullett tied for
10th place in the individual stand
ings which ranks as her fourth-
straight top-12 finish.
Sophomore Anna Becker suf
fered a back injury and withdrew
from the final two rounds.

Madden stays perfect
for men’s tennis team
y 1 »
T he No. 19 Texas A&M
Men’s Tennis Team (11-3,
4-1) will resume Big 12 play
on Friday in Boulder, Colo.,
against No. 38 Colorado and will
travel to Lincoln, Neb., on
Sunday to face No. 68 Nebraska.
Hangin’ with the Pros
Aggie freshman Rafael de
Mesa, currently No. 38 in the
Rolex Collegiate Rankings,
recently competed in the River
Oaks International Tennis
Tournament in Houston.
De Mesa made his presence
known, winning, 6-3, 6-4, in the
first round against the world’s
No. 214-ranked player, Wade
Maguire.
Also competing were Petr
Korda and Jeff Tarango, ranked
No. 3 and No. 50 in the world,
respectively.
Home Court Perfection
At the beginning of a long
March homestand, Coach Tim
Cass said the Aggies’ goal was to
remain undefeated at home, and
they did just that. Including a
make-up match with TCU on
April 2, A&M finished the homes
tand 6-0, and notched its overall
home record to 9-0.
The Aggies will close out their
home season April 18 at 6 p.m.
against Kansas.
Still Going...
Speaking of perfect records,
Aggie freshman Shuon Madden
has improved his to 13-0, after
victories last weekend against
North Carolina and Duke.
Madden, who plays in the No.
3 slot for the Aggies, was recently
named Big 12 Tennis Player of
the Week.
Moving On Up
The Aggies have climbed
steadily in the Rolex Collegiate
Rankings this season, thanks in
part to their ability to do
something so few teams seem
to do: consistently beat lower-
ranked teams.
A&M’s only losses are to
LSU, UT and Duke, all top-15
mainstays.
