Service to community
proves own reward
I’m sorry Aaron Meier feels so disgusted
at helping his fellow man. Let me tell you
about my experience at Big Event. I went
with two other people to an older couple’s
house in Bryan. They have a big tree in
their backyard but lacked the energy to rake
it, so the three of us spent the whole day.
gathering over 40 bags of leaves.
They fed us homemade chili for lunch
and made us feel like part of the family. Al
though what we did was nothing earth shat
tering, the appreciation that the couple
showed made me feel good about myself
the rest of the semester.
I’ll admit that not everyone that receives
Big Event services is poor and weak. It’s not
supposed to be. Big Event is a service pro
vided to all members of the community to
show our appreciation for putting up with
us “beer-guzzling, ax-wielding morons”
(and you have to admit, we must be pretty
hard to put up with sometimes). Sure,
maybe that teenager could have done the
work, but was it really so bad to do a favor
for someone in the community? If we can
get 3,000 students together on a Saturday to
help someone in their community, "some
thing of true worth” is definitely accom
plished. I’d say that’s a pretty big event.

Battalion coverage
posesses bias slant
I am saddened and disappointed by
The Battalion's extremely biased coverage
of Saturday’s pro-choice rally on campus.
In a story headlined “Pro-lifers watch
pro-choice rally in silence,” reporter
Amanda Smith chose to focus on the
handful of anti-choice demonstrators at
the rally instead of on the sizable con
tingent of pro-choice advocates who
spoke about a woman's rij
