Jennifer Box, a Big Event co-chair of expan sion and development and a junior journalism major, said Big Event has drawn as many as 5,000 student workers to complete 500 jobs in the community. “We haven’t turned down a job yet that we can’t do,” Box said. Box said Big Event pro vides students an opportu nity to participate in a num ber of service jobs for people in the Bryan-College Station community. “We do lots of painting and yard work and all differ ent kinds of jobs,” Box said. “Overall, the project im proves the quality of life for beneficiaries of the project.” Students will complete assignments with groups by organization or groups with other individuals. Watkins said the software will also al low his students to perform tasks in class that once required several hours or even days to complete. “The analysis of this data has tradi tionally required vast amounts of paper,” he said. FupingZhu, a graduate geophysics stu dent, has learned using the new software. Zhu said the software is a PC version of seismic interpretation that would usually be done on super-computer work stations in the work place. "The software absolutely benefits us and lets us get a good feeling of the tech niques needed for the future,” she said. She said the software has helped teach her things she could not have learned otherwise. “You cannot learn computer skills from a textbook,” she said.
