SlKe w it has to deal with the fallout
eagi.e with 31 teams, an odd
er that will force at least one
iTeT; to be off each week, including
1 The Battalion
Sports
the first and last weeks of the season.
“I’d love to have a bye week then,”
Pittsburgh owner Dan Rooney said of
the final weekend. “It would allow us
to rest up for the playoffs. But I cer
tainly wouldn’t want it if we already
had a playoff bye. Two weeks off at
that time of the year is too much.”
For now, Rooney’s team is proba
bly too good to get the last week off.
Commissioner Paul Tagliabue said
Tuesday that the byes the last four
weeks would go to teams that fin
ished last in their divisions the previ
ous year. The probable contenders
will have their off weeks in the first
half of the season.
That is not a perfect system in an
era when a team can go from bad to
good or good to bad very quickly.
Examples: The Dallas Cowboys
went from 10-6 to 6-10 last season
and the Oakland Raiders, a pre
sumed Super Bowl contender at the
start of the year,
finished 4-12.
The New York
Giants and Jets
and Tampa Bay all
suddenly became
contenders, the
Giants going from
last to first in the
NFC East.
The Jets, 1-15 in 1996, might
have had the last week off in 1997

in a 31-team league. In a 30-team
league, they played one of the more
dramatic final games in recent
years, a 13-10 loss to Detroit that
knocked them out of the playoffs
and put the Lions in.
“It’s a mixed bag,” said Tampa Bay
coach Tony Dungy, who guided the
Bugs into the playoffs last season for
the first time in 15 years.
“If you’re already in and you know
you’ll play the next week it’s great to
rest players up. On the other hand,
maybe it’s your opponent that gets
that week off and your first playoff
game is against a team that’s health
ier and more rested than you are.”
“The bigger problem is actually
with the exhibition season,” said
Joe Ellis, the league’s vice presi
dent for club administration. “The
teams largely make their own
matches and we have to make sure
everything meshes.”
