The Texas A&M Softball Team (20-14-1)
plays a doubleheader tonight against Sam
Houston State University (11-18) at the Ag
gie Softball Field starting at 5 p.m. The Ag
gies have won their last ten match-ups
with SHSU.
The doubleheader is the team’s first series
since their tournament in Sacramento over
Spring Break. The Aggies won two games and
lost three in the tournament.
Senior catcher and co-captain Marianne
McGuire said they played well in the tourna
ment, but that they need to bring it all to
gether at once, something she said the team
can do against Sam Houston.
“The first three games of the tournament
we did pretty well, then we got in a bit of a
funk,” McGuire said. “Sam Houston is usual
ly a pretty scrappy team, they usually have
some pretty decent hitters, but they are very
beatable. We play them every year, so we
pretty much know what’s in store.”
McGuire said the team must concen
trate on playing well all around, whether
it is at the plate or on the field.
“We’ll have our pitching on one day, and
then our fielding
will be off,” she
said, “or our de
fense is on and our
hitting is off. We
need to put it to
gether and win
games.”
Kristina Gan-
dara, a freshman
and one of
tonight’s starting
pitchers, said she

Houston. I just know that we have to
come out from the get go, that from the
very beginning we need to start hitting
and scoring runs.”
The Aggie Softball team has played well
at home in tournaments, with a record of
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm 10-5-1 in non
tournament play.
Gandara has an
ERA of 2.86, as
well as two saves
and one win un
der her belt.
Fellow fresh
man ace Ashley
Lewis is also ex
pected to play
tonight. Lewis has
the lowest ERA on
the team at 1.40
“We need to
put it all
together and
win games
gies need to step it up and play collectively.
“We’ve got to be prepared,” Gandara
said. “I don’t know much about Sam
and has 90 strikeouts in 85 innings. She was
named to the 1998 AirTouch Cellular Capi
tal Classic all-tournament team last week.

jumped eight spots to No. 19. In the singles rank-

ne Sweet Home
^M Coach Tim Cass said the Aggies’ goal for the
’th ol March is to remain undefeated at home,
and it looks like A&M will accomplish this. After victo
ries over Pepperdine, Miami and Oklahoma State, all
the Aggies need to do now is knock off Mizzou and
OU on Friday to notch their record at the Omar Smith
Tennis Center this season to 8-0.
El Nino
Unseasonably cold weather, high winds and rain
have combined to wreak havoc on the Aggies’ sched
ule this year. The Abilene Christian match was relo
cated to an indoor facility in the Woodlands. The Mia
mi match had to be delayed a day and matches
against USE and TCU have yet to be completed.
Madden Mania
Freshman Shuon Madden, who joined the Aggies
at the semester, is undefeated in singles play this sea
son. Madden, who normally plays in the No. 3 slot for
A&M, moved up to No. 2 against Pepperdine and won
easily. Madden’s 9-0 record also includes wins against
LSU and UT.

Once again, you have to give L.A. the nod in the
National League West Division. They have a solid of
fense, defense and pitching staff with a good
bullpen and trustworthy closer. So why haven’t the
Dodgers been able to put it together these past few
years with, es
sentially, the
same team?
No one knows,
but this should
be the year for
L.A., again.
