What many don’t take into account is the cornucopia of culture comics offer. Funny books, comics, graphic novels... whatev er they are referred to as, the medium is unique. A mixture of art and words, the comic book is not quite a book or a picture. It is a great way to read for those with a short attention span. Comic books also allow readers to enter a fantasy world where they are exposed to situ ations they normally would not have the op portunity to participate in. It isn’t often that the average Joe (or Joanne) gets to face off against a radioactive monkey with a genius IQ trying to take over the world. This is where comics come in to the picture. Funny books offer life lessons to readers with an imaginary spin. The main theme in most comics is if something bad happens to you, the best solution is to parade around in tights. It works for guys such as Spiderman and Batman. But there also is a downside to comics. Un fortunately, it is still considered to be a male medium. There are female funny book fans, but their numbers are still small when com pared to male readers. Some of this might be due to the fact that the escapist fantasy of your typical comic book is lost on the average woman. Usually, it is hard for someone to imagine having the mind control powers of Professor X, when for them it is already a reality. Also, although more and more comic books are trying to gain other readers than the typi cal “fan boy” base with books offering realistic stories, the main focus is young males. Super-hero books, which make up the bulk of the comic market, still reflect the male ideal of super powers. Beating up bad guys and attracting hot women are classic male fantasies. If comic book publishers were to make su- per-heros more palatable to the average female, there would be characters such as the Limitless Charge Card I .ass and Raging Estrogen Gal. Their bat tles would consist of trying to find the best clothing deals atalli rial Day sales and telling guysty to be friends. tlm The truth is anyone can findsor enjoy in comic books.
