Emilio Estevez is not a coach,
but he plays one in the movies.
Estevez played the head coach
in the classic films Mighty Ducks I,
II and III. The trilogy is perhaps
rivaled only by The Godfather tril
ogy and the Star Wars trilogy.
Estevez plays lawyer Gordon
Bombay in all three movies.
Bombay is sentenced to commu
nity service in the first movie and
becomes coach of the Mighty
Ducks, the ’90s version of the
Bad News Bears.
Bombay brought discipline to
the unruly Ducks and led them to
a plethora of wins. However,
Bombay knew when to say when
with the “tough love,” as the
youngsters call it. He experienced
a painful moment of his own
when he missed a potential game
winning shot because of the
undue pressure placed on him by
his pee-wee coach. He would not
become a coach like that.
After Bombay took the Mighty
Ducks to the top, he then had the
opportunity to coach them in the
Junior Goodwill Games.
Unfortunately, Bombay let this
opportunity go to his head.
Eventually, Bombay would learn
from this new mistake and make
the best of the games.
Even though Estevez was not a
coach in Young Guns, he was the
de facto leader of the gang, Billy the
Kid. His endearing personality and
sedate temper propelled him to the
top of the pre-gangster world.
Estevez was also in Freejack, a
post-modern study on car racing
and its effects on bad movies.

The Reds really don’t have a
chance this season. Barring
some unforeseen surge like
the Pirates made last season,
Cincinnati will spend the
entire season, from day one,
looking up at five team in the
NL Central.
Cincinnati does have a good
offense, with Barry Larkin,
Reggie Sanders, Brett Boone
and Willie Green, but its pitch
ing will not have the depth to
keep them in ball games.
The Reds only have two
starting pitchers who have
completed full Major League
seasons, Dave Burba and
Brett Tomko, who was a rook
ie last season.
The Reds lost four of five
opening-day members of last
season’s rotation, but do
return the league’s top closer,
Jeff Shaw, who was a huge sur
prise with 42 saves.
