Continued from Page 3
She makes a solid transition from
television to the silver screen, and
she deserves the recognition. Ok,
Kate was something heavenly in Ti
tanic, but that ship has a bigger
award in tow — besides, the sinking
ship outweighs any stellar acting....
• And for Best Actor:
Matt Damon in Good Will Hunt
ing. He’s just a baby. There’s no
way, not against this bunch. Robert
Duvall, The Apostle; Peter Fonda,
Ulee’s Gold; Dustin Hoffman, Wag
the Dog; and Jack Nicholson, As
Good As It Gets.
Almost without hesitation, the
Academy will give the nod to Nichol
son for his third Oscar win. His com
ic intensity, trademark eyebrows and
flyaway hair fit the cruel bigot in As
Good As It Gets almost too well. Run
ning on his 11th Oscar nomination,
Nicholson’s role is as good as it
needs to be. Lagging far behind Jack,
Hoffman, Fonda and Duvall all give
solid, even stirring performances,
but the overall films they were a part
of just plain fizzled at the box office.
Ok, these last two categories can
be lumped together because we all
know who’s gonna win — that hairy,
behemoth mammoth Titanic will
walk away witli Best Director for
James Cameron and the Oscar for
Best Picture.
For Best Director, Cameron is
up against the likes of Gus Van
Sant for Good Will Hunting, Peter
Catteneo for The Full Monty, Atom
Egoyan for The Sweet Hereafter
and Curtis Hanson for L.A. Confi
dential. These guys might have
had good scripts and some talent
ed actors, but no one is swooning
over their somewhat quirky pic
tures, unlike their rival, Titanic,
which has a captive audience.
For Best Picture, Titanic is pit
ted against As Good As It Gets, The
Full Monty, Good Will Hunting and
LA. Confidential. With Celine
Dion on the soundtrack and that
teen heart-throb sensation Di-
Caprio cavorting with Winslet, this
record-grossing film is just as likely
to win as Clinton is to having an
affair this month.
Sure the other films are moving,
touching, we may have even snif
fled a bit, but they’re just the pint-
sized beers trying to compete with
a Spring-Break sized Yard-’O-AIe.
