It was a day of contradictions
for the Texas A&M Men’s Tennis
Team. The sun was shining
brightly at the Omar Smith
Tennis Center, but the air was
frigid. The Aggies’ opponent was
ranked No. 50, but played like a
team ranked much higher. In the
end, though, No. 33 Texas A&M
emerged with a 6-1 victory over
the Miami Hurricanes.
Heading into Monday after
noon’s match, the Aggies knew
better than to take Miami lightly.
The last team rankings had come
out in December, and the
Hurricanes had since added one
of the nation’s top juniors, Rudy
Rocke. Also, just two days earlier
in Austin, Miami was one point
away from knocking off No. 8
University of Texas.
Senior Carlos Tori said defeating
Miami was a relief for the Aggies.
“Beating them (Miami) took a
weight off our backs, because
while they’re not highly ranked,
they are a good team that can beat
anybody," Tori said.
A&M freshman Shuon Madden,
who is from Florida, shared Tori’s
relief, and said the cold weather
helped the Aggies’ cause.
“The weather today favored us
a lot,” Madden said. “It’s never
this cold in Miami."
The Aggies (6-2, 1-1) started off
Monday’s match by winning the
doubles point, something they
