The Texas A&M Track and Field Team concluded its indoor season last weekend at the Big 12 Indoor Conference Championships in Ames, Iowa. In a tremendous con trast to last year’s Conference Championships, the Aggies fared well this season and could send as many as 12 athletes to the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis, Ind., on March 13-14, compared to just one a year ago. Welcome To The Club While in Ames, the Aggies acquired four more automatic qualifications and seven provi sional qualifications. In the 200- meter dash, senior Billy Fobbs automatically qualified with his time of 20.92 seconds, which was also a Big 12-meet record. Sophomore Richard McDonald, who had previously provisionally qualified in the pole vault, increased that to an automatic qualification with his vault of 18 feet, 0.05 inches, which tied McDonald with the Texas A&M record and earned him a second- place finish. Other automatic qualifiers included seniors Larry Wade and Adrien Sawyer, who had each already automatically qualified in their respective events. Wade, however, set the meet record with his blistering time of 7.09 seconds in the 55- meter hurdles. The provisional qualifiers were comprised of sophomore Johan Lannefors in the 400-meter dash, junior Detrich Clariett in the triple-jump, and the 1,600-meter relay of junior Derrick Woods, Lannefors, Wade and senior Mike McKinney. Fobbs, sophomore Jon Nance, junior Mike Lowrance and sophomore Chimika Carter each renewed their provisional qualifications, with only Nance and Clariett improving their pre vious marks. Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down After missing the entire indoor season a year ago due to an injury, there must have been some spec ulation surrounding the return of Wade to the indoor track this year. Those who had doubts quickly had a change of heart when, in his first meet back, Wade smoked the competition for a first-place finish in Houston. In 27 years, he had won six in three different leagues. Now, in the 28th year of a much-honored career, he’s won seven in four. A panel of 24 media representa tives, noting his 21-5 record with a team most expected to finish no higher than seventh, made him an easy winner Thursday of The Associated Press Big 12 coach of the year award. “The problem with these things is the assistant coaches and the players don’t get the recognition they deserve,” said Sutton, who was previously chosen top coach with Arkansas in the Southwest Conference, Kentucky in the Southeastern Conference and Oklahoma State in the Big Eight. “There’s always an element of luck involved in having a good season, but this team has also had the ability,” Sutton said. The former Oklahoma State player under the legendary Henry Iba drew 20 votes, while three went to Kansas’ Roy Williams and one to Kelvin Sampson of Oklahoma. Even Sutton, the only man to take four different teams to the NCAA tournament, admits these 1997-98 Cowboys have had “a Cinderella year.” Most observers picked Oklahoma State no better than seventh and at least a couple had them slated for dead last in the Big 12’s second season. The previous year, they were 17-15. “It’s been a fun year,” Sutton said. “Any time you surpass what everybody predicts your team will do, it’s satisfying. We’re a young team, but they have made a lot of progress. “I knew we were a lot better than last.” Like a master mechanic build ing a race car out of discarded spare parts, Sutton created a team sr ny be the 19th in his 28 ye:'d the NCAA tournat® Cowboys wound up 1 q 0 | league, tied with Oklahoma for runner-up behind Kansas (15-1). They edged the Sooners for No. 2 seed in the Big 12 tournament via a tiebreaker. ’ The biggest improvement over last year came at pi dr when Doug Gottlieb bee t ble after sitting out ayea-i C plied leadership and suckle; wizardry that the ballwi ; ing off guys’ heads wlu body adjusted to lii Gottlieb was voted theAfl newcomer of the year ing the conference v assists per game.
