Public, private programs
join to provide AIDS drugs
AUSTIN (AP) — State health offi
cials announced a public-private
program Tuesday that they say will
help people with the virus that caus
es AIDS to cope
with the high wmmmmmmmmmmmmm
costs of new
drug therapies.
The Texas
Department of
Health, which
has about $4
million to buy
drugs for people
with HIV and
AIDS who can
not afford them,
said the Ameri
can AIDS Foun- â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â– Mi
dation has
pledged to raise matching funds to
make certain everyone eligible gets
access to treatment.
New drug combinations — fre
quently called “cocktail therapies”
— are prolonging the lives of peo
ple with the human immunodefi
ciency virus.
“For the first time in years, people
with HIV and those who love thern
are daring to plan for longer, happier
futures. We are determined to see
that anyone who needs these drugs
gets them,” said Jim Powell, president
of the nonprofit AIDS foundation.
The drugs are expensive, officials
said. Costs per patient can add up to
“...people with HIV and
those who love them are
daring to plan for longer,
happier futures.”
Jim Powell
President of the AIDS foundation
$9,000 to $15,000 a year.
Many people can cover the costs
by insurance, personal income or
by federal and state programs for
the needy or des-
mmmmmmmmmmmmm perately ill. But
some patients
still are left with
out the medi
cines.
“Without the
private matching
dollars provided
by the American
AIDS Founda
tion, the state’s
ability to help
everyone who
â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â– Mi needs our assis
tance would be
greatly limited,” said Dr. William
Archer, state health commissioner.
“The foundation’s support will
help us reach Texans who need our
help,” he said.
In Texas, about 16,000 people are
living with AIDS and an estimated
50,000 are infected with the virus.
The Health Department said hun
dreds of Texans with HIV are, at any
given time, not able to obtain the life
saving medications. Often they can
not get these drugs therapies through
disability insurance and cannot ob
tain private insurance, yet they aren’t
poor enough or sick enough to be el
igible for assistance programs.
Close friend of Clinton
family testifies to jury
WASHINGTON (AP) — Com
pelled to tell his story to a grand
jury, Vernon Jordan spent a full
day Tuesday answering prosecu
tors’ questions about his efforts
to help Monica Lewinsky and
predicted afterwards his “endur
ing friendship” with President
Clinton will survive.
The first of the three major fig
ures in the investigation to give
testimony, the Washington super
lawyer said he had answered all
the questions posed to him be
hind closed doors but was told to
return Thursday.
Jordan, a longtime friend,
confidant and golfing compan
ion of the president, declined to
say what he told Kenneth W.
Starr’s investigators about the re
lationship between Clinton and
Lewinsky.
“I answered all of their ques
tions truthfully and completely,
to the best of my ability,” said Jor
dan, whose efforts to find Lewin
sky a job and a lawyer in late De
cember and early January landed
him in the middle of the contro
versy.
His lawyer, William Hundley,
told a reporter that Jordan had
been taken through a “slow, step
by step” interrogation. But he did
not elaborate.
Jordan, however, did seek to
minimize speculation that the
protracted investigation had
“cast doubt on my friendship
with President Clinton.”
“Let me reassure you that ours
is an enduring friendship, an en
during friendship based on mu
tual respect, trust and admira
tion," he said. “That was true
yesterday. That is true today. That
will be true tomorrow.”
Starr has been moving toward
Clinton
summoning Lewinsky before the
grand jury but has made no effort
yet to question the president.
Jordan’s grand jury appear
ance had all the trappings of a
major Washington media event.
He arrived with a police escort to
face a throng of cameras and re
porters, with whom he would lat
er joke at lunchtime.
“Maybe if you all behave,” Jor
dan quipped in the courthouse
cafeteria
when re
porters asked
if he would
give a state
ment at day’s
end. His state
ment was car
ried live on
CNN.
At the
White House,
aides anxious
ly awaited the completion of his
appearance.
Presidential spokesperson
Mike McCurry told reporters he
thought that Jordan, Clinton’s
close personal friend and unoffi
cial adviser, would “absolutely”
give testimony helpful to the
president.
Meanwhile, individuals famil
iar with the case said two other
figures — White House aide
Bruce Lindsey and Clinton’s per
sonal secretary Betty Currie —
would probably return for more
testimony before the grand jury
as early as Thursday.
And Francis Carter, the lawyer
whom Jordan arranged to repre
sent Lewinsky, is mounting a
court challenge to a subpoena
from Starr seeking his docu
ments. A hearing was scheduled
Wednesday.
