Continued from Page 1
Occupancy levels for fall 1997
fell to 98 percent, which placed a
strain on Residence Life budgets,
Sasse said.
“If our budget is built on 99 per
cent occupancy and we only have
98 percent, we don’t have enough
money to make the budget,” he
said.
In order to account for budget
deficiencies, the Department of
Residence Life keeps money on re
serve. Sasse said that the bond
covenants require the department
to maintain a certain amount of
money in reserve to complete bond
payments.
“It is just good business practice
to have reserves,” Sasse said. “We
also have $26 million in deferred
maintenance that we need to com
plete.”
Of the 1999 fiscal year budget, a
30.5 percent increase will fund a
portion of the priority items on the
deferred maintenance list. Expect
ed increases in operation and staff
costs account for an 8 percent in
crease in the budget. A 4 percent
increase will fund anticipated
maintenance and repair costs.

Eric Williams, the Residence Hall
Association (RITA.) president, said
electronic contract renewal caters
to students.
“With it being over the Web, you
don’t have to go out of your way to
renew contracts,” Williams said. “If
you are at the computer checking
your e-mail, you can renew your
contracts then. It is convenient.”
Thomas said the Department of
Residence Life is working on a pro
gram to expand contract renewal.
That step would open the door
to incoming freshman students for
electronic contracts, Thomas said.
The addition of electronic re
newal comes with additional
changes by the Department of Res
idence Life and supported by RHA.
Honda dominates
most-stolen list
DETROIT (AP) — While the 1989
Toyota Camry led the list of 1997’s
most stolen cars, more than half of
the 25 most pilfered vehicles were
made by Honda.
“It’s the price we pay for having
one of the best selling cars in the mar
ket,” said Andy Boyd, spokesperson
for Honda Motor Co.
Only five U.S. nameplates ap
peared on the list of the top 25,
CCC Information Services Inc.
said Monday.
“This year’s study reflects the grow
ing popularity of foreign cars not only
among consumers but also among
car thieves,” said Jack Rozint, senior
vice president of Chicago-based CCC.
The Honda Accord dominated the
most-stolen list with 12 models.
