The Aggies (7-0) defeated Baylor 6-3 in College Station last year. “Baylor has got a good team,” Coach Bobby Kleinecke said. “They play hard every point, and overall they are a solid group that you have to play well against.” In addition to being the Aggies’ first conference opponent, Baylor represents another strong regional test for A&M. Regional victories are sig nificant to the team’s NCAA Tournament seeding, and the Aggies already have three after defeating Houston, LSU and Rice. Kleinecke said remaining undefeated after playing several strong teams has come as a pleas ant surprise to him. “We’ve dodged a few bullets, and we have had a few breaks go our way,” he said. “At this point, I did not think we would be 7-0, so that’s obviously a big confi dence booster.” Junior Monica San Miguel said the team’s success has been a boost for the players’ attitudes. “I think it (being undefeated) has helped us a lot as a team because everyone has a good atti tude, and overall we are all very excited,” San Miguel said. Since Baylor is ranked higher than A&M, San Miguel said she and the rest of her teammates are anxious to show the Aggies the better team. “We think we should be ranked higher than them (Baylor),” she said. “They may be a good team, but we know we can handle them.” Aggie Sports Briefs from staff and wire reports Aggies take final round golf victory The Texas A&M Women’s Golf Team stormed back in the third round to overtake Campbell University for first place in the GTE/Mo’Morial Invitational Tournament on Tuesday at Pebble Creek Country Club. Campbell led A&M by four strokes before making up 13 strokes in the final round to pull ahead of Campbell by nine strokes to take the tournament. The top two finishers in the tournament were A&M’s Isabelle Rosberg and Anna Becker. Four Aggie golfers placed in the top 20. Rosberg fired an opening round 71 and finished at 3-over for the tournament with a score of 219 to lead the field. Rosberg was the only Aggie to record a sub-par round in the tour nament. Campbell’s Mara Larrauri and Maria Combes tied for fifth place overall. Campbell was the only other school to place four golfers in the top 20 overall. A&M falls 10-7 to Sam Houston A four-RBI performance by sopho more Steve Scarborough was not enough to overcome two late-inning home runs by Sam Houston State as the Aggies lost their second game of the 1998 campaign, 10-7. Bearkat pitcher Greg Kubes showed the Aggies why he was a Team USA selection this summer by not giving up an earned run in the seven innings he worked. Sophomore Chance Caple threw four innings for the Aggies and gave up two earned runs. The Aggies led 7-3 going into the bottom of the sixth, but Sam Houston State got four runs, two off of a home run, to tie the game up. The Bearkats put three more runs on the board in the seventh to take the lead, and the Aggies did not score again. A&M will try to rebound from the loss Friday at Olsen field as they battle Texas Tech in the first Big 12 game of the year.
