It may have been been the sin
gle most amazing high school
basketball season in the storied
history of Indiana basketball. The
season first-year Coach Norman
Dale led the
Dale
Hickory
Huskers to the
state title.
Dale showed
an impressive
ability to corral
the wild, non-
talented group
of players he
inherited and
form them into
a cohesive unit.
Dale laid down the ground
rules his team was to follow and
never wavered. He cut two play
ers in the first practice for talking
while he was talking, an act that
would later inspire Cowboy’s
Coach Jimmy Johnson, and once
chose to finish a game with four
players after one chose to disre
gard his coaching instructions.
Needless to say, Dale’s strict
handling of the team was not
popular with the local fans. He
was actually called before the
town council and voted out as
head coach before Hickory’s bey
player, Jimmy Chitwood, whohac
been sitting out the season to tha:
point, announced he would
rejoin the team only if Dale was
allowed to stay. The council then
voted Dale back in as coach.
Dale obviously commands the
respect of his players, even those
who had not actually played for
him. Chitwood saw values in the
coach that are essential to the
success of the team.
Not only was Dale respected
by his players for his handling of
the team, he was an incompara
ble coach on the floor. It was
Dale’s idea to hire Shooter as an
assistant coach. Even though
Shooter was a raging alcoholic, he
had the vision to run the picket-
fence play to steal a victory from
Dugger High School late in the
season and propel the Huskers
into the playoffs. Shooter would
end up listening to the state
championship game in detox
back in Hickory, but Dale’s deci
sion to give him a coaching
opportunity was genius.
Hickory was a huge underdog
in the title game against South
Bend Central High School, which
was the defending state champi
on, but Dale would not let his
team be deterred, and Hickory
beat the Tigers on a last-second
shot by Chitwood.
Dale also has some college
coaching experience, but was
expelled by the NCAA after hitting Steve I
one of his players. Dale does
admit, however, he was at fault,
and with the current state of col
legiate athletics, this may be
exactly what the NCAA needs.

team is coming back. This team is

Once again Sharpe has found
herself in the right place at the

be linked to A&M’s emergence
over the next couple of seasons,
something she hoped for when
choosing A&M. Recognizing the
chance to contribute early,
Sharpe chose to attend A&M
