Ags suffer 15 th straight k]
bn
By Jeff Schmidt
Staff writer
With four losses by four points
or less, the Texas A&M Men’s
Basketball Team should have fig
ured out how to win a close game
by this point in the season. Maybe
not. The Aggies lost to the Texas
Tech Red Raiders for the second
time this season 86-83. This was
the Aggies 15th straight loss,
breaking Texas A&M’s all-time
losing streak of 14 games.
With ten seconds left in the
game, sophomore guard Steve
Houston could not handle a
deflected pass and turned the ball
over to Tech guard Stanley
Bonewitz. Bonewitz then calmly
sank two free throws to give Tech
an insurmountable four-point
lead. Tech guard Rayford Young
would make two more free throws
to stretch the lead to six points,
but Houston would hit a three-
pointer at the buzzer to cut the
final deficit to three.
“I take full blame for the play
that was set up at the end of the
game. We were going for three. I
didn’t think we could last in over
time, so I wanted to try to get a
three-point basket,” Coach Tony
Barone said.
Junior forward Shanne Jones,
who fouled out at the 4:47 mark with
19 points, was not so apologetic.
“We just find a way to let it slip
through our hands,” Jones said.
A&M held the lead for the final
ten minutes of the first half before
going into the locker room with a
49-41 lead. The Aggies outplayed
Tech throughout the first half,
scoring 17 points off 13 Tech
turnovers and receiving 16 points
off the bench.
However, the Aggies could not
stop a furious Tech rally near the
beginning of the second half.
The rally was led by senior
guard Cory Carr. Carr, the Big 12’s
leading scorer, was held to just
four points in the first period by
Houston’s superb defense. But
Carr sparked the rally with five
points and two assists in the come
back to help Tech to its first lead
since the 9:47 mark in the first half.
Barone is quick to praise Carr’s
ability and his attitude.
“I think he has the ability to be
a pro. Not because he’s a great
player, but because he’s an
absolutely unbelievable kid,”

Women’s Golf Team will host the
Fifth Annual GTE/Mo-Morial
Monday and Tuesday at Pebble
Creek Country Club. The tourna
ment will start at 8 a.m. on Monday
with the golfers playing 36 holes.
The Aggies will participate with
15 other schools, including No.
12-ranked TCU, No. 15-ranked
Memphis, No. 24 Missouri, and
No. 27 Campbell.
“We have a strong field with
Campbell and TCU finishing with
good showings at last year’s
Nationals, and they both bring
back some strong individuals,”
A&M Coach Jeanne Sutherland
said. “Missouri also has a fine
team. I think they might be a bit
hampered by a lack of practice
because of the weather up there.
There are a lot of good in
in this field but I really don
how deep their teams are.”
