A udiences can’t ac
cuse Senseless of hav
ing a misleading title.
The new comedy star
ring Marlon Wayans and
David Spade provides
some low-brow laughs, but
not much else.
Daryl Witherspoon
(Wayans) is a busy college
student trying to pay a
mountain of bills and con
centrate on class. He holds
more jobs than he can handle and he still can’t
seem to make a dent in his expenses.
Witherspoon also is after a prestigious job at
an investment firm, which he hopes to use to
get his rather large family out of the slums. He
faces stiff competition in the form of a snide
classmate (David Spade) with better resources.
Enter an advertisement asking for volunteers
to try an experimental drug. The pay is $3,000
and the drug will improve the five senses dra
matically. Witherspoon jumps at this opportu
nity, since he needs the money and the edge.
There are quite a few side effects, rectal itching
being one of them.
Senseless does provide a few solid laughs
even if they all relate to bodily functions.
The are enough fart jokes in the movie to
make a season of South Park episodes. But
they are funny.
Wayans exhibits the family talent for come
dy as he mugs with bravado that would make
Jim Carrey jealous.
He is a fairly talented physical comedian with his
influences more along the lines of Jerry Lewis than
any of his older brothers.
David Spade is his usual acid-tongued elfin self.
Unfortunately, he is not around except to be a foil to
Wayans. The movie really could have played off the
duo a lot more, considering Spade’s success playing
off another physical comedian, the late Chris Farley.
Director Penelope Spheeris, who gave audiences a
similar sense of humor with Wayne’s World, keeps
the film’s pacing brisk and interesting.
The movie bogs down when it tries to be sen
timental and romantic. Itchy butt jokes and
cracks about bowel movements do not usually
move the heart.
Senseless does provide the kind of mindless fun
audiences might seek (or need) after viewing a cou
ple of this year’s Oscar contenders. It is a great movie
for those who thought The Wedding Singer was too
serious in its tone.
Exercise
Continued from Page 3
Judy Kallus, a speaker for Aggie R.E.A.C.H.
and a senior nutrition major, said students need
to realize how much their eating habits impact
their health.
“Nutrition is very important,” Kallus said. “If you
ask me, nutrition is the basis of preventative medi
cine. Good nutrition is the basis for preventing
chronic disease, and when you mix it with exercise
you do double the good.”
The Healthy Living series helps students un
derstand the basics of nutrition, health and how
to manage relationships in a package they can di
gest without getting confused.
For students who are stuck in the doldrums
and desperately looking for a way out, look no
further than the phone book or the nearest kiosk.
Help is readily available. All an individual needs
to do is provide the Jell-O mold for sculpting.
