Monday • February 16, Aggie Sports New from staff and wire reports Aggies streak by foes in Arlington The Texas A&M Baseball Team won the \JJ-ArWr\g\on/Arlington Morning News Invitational Tournament this weekend, going undefeated in three games. A&M opened the tournament with a 7-0 defeat of Arkansas State on Friday night and continued their success on Saturday with a 17-3 thrashing of Oral Roberts. A&M closed out the weekend by beating the host school, UT-Arlington, 10-6 to take the tournament championship and improve their season record to 7-0. In yesterday’s game, junior cen ter fielder Jason Tyner broke New York Yankees second baseman Chuck Knoblauch’s career stolen base record of 83. The Aggies return to Olsen Field Tuesday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Dallas Baptist University. Softball a success at UTA tournament The Texas A&M Softball Team advanced all the way to the semifi nals of the UT-Arlington-Pepsi Intercollegiate Classic this weekend before falling to llth-ranked Oklahoma State yesterday, 7-3. In the quarterfinals, A&M beat Baylor 3-1 behind a strong perfor mance from freshman pitcher Ashley Lewis, who earned her sec ond victory of the tournament, allowing only three hits and strik ing out four. The Aggies opened round-robin play Friday night with a 5-3 victory over Tulsa, and a 3-1 triumph over UT-Arlington. On Saturday, A&M handed Mississippi a 3-2 loss and knocked off Stephen F. Austin 2-1 to win its pool and advance to the elim ination rounds of the tournament. Men’s basketball downed by Tigers The Texas A&M Men’s Basketball Team (6-16, 0-12) lost to the Missouri Tigers (14-11, 6-6) 73-60 Saturday night in Columbia, Mo. The loss is the Aggies’ 13th straight over all and 12th straight loss in confer ence. The Aggies are one loss away from equaling the A&M record for consecutive losses of 14, which was set in 1944 during World War II. Missouri was led by guard John Woods’ outside shooting. With only eight active players, A&M was forced to play zone defense to conserve energy. Woods took advantage of the zone, going 5 of 10 from beyond the three-point arc and scoring a team leading 21 points. Also scoring in double figures for Missouri were Kelly Thames with 14, Brian Grawer with 11 and Monte Hardge with 10 points and 13 rebounds. The Aggies were led by freshman guard Michael Schmidt. Schmidt had his best shooting night as an Aggie going 8 for 11 from the field on his way to a career- and game-high 24 points. Schmidt was one of only three Aggies who scored in double figures as A&M shot only 37 percent from the field.
