Inds are in them.
Itis a clear picture of the effect

,But it’s worth it.
If you can get past Bette Mi
dler’s frizzy, red locks and Bar
bara Hershey’s poor-little-rich-
girl pout, Beaches is a touching
story of friendship, envy,
strength and determination.
There’s nothing like a god
tear jerker to remind you to put
aside petty differences and ap
preciate the important things in
life — like best friends.
So the next time the wind be
neath your wings calls, don’t for
get to tell him he’s your hero.

h in the streets, what

me?” Bette Midler’s
character cranks out a song deal
ing with social injustice in the
friends-forever-flick Beaches.
Although the film is about
friendship and all that a lifetime
can hold for two people, Beaches
is all about the sappy song,
‘‘Wind Beneath My Wings.”
When the song’s lyrics start
to play in the background,
close to the end of the film, you
can almost feel the tragedy
about to happen.
Music, friendship and tears

can offer.

T here is a whole lot of les
bian subtext in this
movie. Bette Midler is the
dominant butch and Barbara
Hershey is the luscious femme.
They end having a child with
out a man and holding each
others hands on Death’s bed.
“The Wind Beneath My
Wings” is a song about lesbian
love and feminine hygiene. There
is so much blatant sapphic lust, it
is like watching a "Xena” episode.
—Travis Irby
I t’s great when a movie tran
scends racial, sexual, and eth
nic boundaries to unite all
walks of life. Clear and simple,
Beaches brings people together.
Fire this baby up, and watch the
walls come tumbling down.
You’ll not only learn about
each other, but you’ll learn a lit
tle something about yourself.
Whether it’s once a week or
three times a day, make it your
special habit to watch Beaches.
— Chris Martin

If you’re deep into: Pink Floyd,
new U2, Rush, Queen.
Sink your teeth into: Olivia Tremor
Control, Bevis Frond, the Aluminum
Group, His Name is Alive, Space Needle.
These bands came from outer
space to bring you as many layers of
music as can possibly fit on a half
inch reel-to-reel.
By definition, indie rock is hard to
come by. Whereas Matchbox 20 and
Third Eye Blind have thousands of dol
lars of corporate cash at their disposal
for promotion, distribution and airplay,
an indie band usually only has word-of-
mouth publicity and its parents’ den for
a distribution office. Although this
makes albums hard to come by, it also
means lower prices. Other good places
to get indie music include internet CD
distributors and special ordering from
your local music store.
Don’t let the relative obscurity of
indie rock scare you. During the
Spanish Inquisition thousands were
persecuted for crying out “Yo quero
indie rock!” Today, it’s your govern
ment-mandated right. Give indie
rock a spin — and let freedom ring.
