Ig innings boost Aggies over Tarleton St., 9-4
By Jeff Webb
Staff writer
xas A&M pitcher Chance Caple tast-
ctory for the first time in an Aggie
irm Wednesday afternoon, and the
h hitting of second baseman Sean
icy helped out tremendously in the
process. The Aggies de
feated Tarleton State 9-
4 at Olsen Field where
Heaney missed hitting
for the cycle by a triple
and nailed a line-drive
home run over the
right-field fence in the
third inning to help the
Aggies to a 4-0 record
on the season.
“I actually didn’t
. it was gone,” Heaney said. “I didn’t
I hit it that well. I guess I just got lucky
t left the yard.”
iple 1 tad minimal trouble with theTex-
ineup, allowing five hits and three runs
e innings of strong work. The lone of-
ve bright spot for TSU was short stop
3ad|off hitter Victor Sauceda who went
4 wit h a home run and two RBI. Caple
ohnson
seemed a bit wild in the second inning
when he walked a batter and then hit one
“It feels good to go out and
see the team do as well as they
did and get your £rst win.”

but regrouped by striking out two to end the
inning. Run support allowed Caple to chal
lenge hitters and he did, striking out three
in his five innings.
“It feels good to go out and see the team
do as well as they did today and get your
first win,” Caple said. “It makes me feel
more confident going into my next game.
It’s a lot better knowing that you have the
defense playing so well behind you.”
Texas A&M Coach Mark Johnson want
ed to get his pitchers some work, and yes
terday provided a good opportunity.
“We wanted to get some pitchers out
there,” Johnson said. “Chance hadn’t been
out there yet, so it was a good start for
him. Contrary to what people think, I
don’t care if you’re in the big leagues,
you’re always nervous when you get that
first out. To get in there and pick up a ‘W’
is a big plus for him.”
The Aggie defense did play well despite
having their first error of the season. In the
eighth inning, Courtney Weller was on in re
lief and walked the bases loaded when Tar
leton State designated hitter Brian Buffa-
monte grounded into an inning-ending
double play. Defense was not so spectacu
lar for Tarleton State. The Texans had three
errors and outfielder Jonny Hinojosa had
problems with the sun in right field, losing
two well-hit balls that led to Aggie runs.
“The sun gets bad out there and I know
how it feels, but the sun is on both teams,”
Aggie left fielder Steven Truitt said. “We
did a good job. We had a lot of fly balls, but
it’s still early.”
The Aggie bullpen closed out the game
in style, allowing only one hit and one run
in their four innings of work. The Aggies
travel to Arlington this weekend for the Ar-
lington Morning News I VTA Invitational.
