    Aggies making strong mark early
A&M is off to fast indoor start with four NCAA qualifications, two school records
On Saturday, the Texas A&M Track and Field
Teams will travel to Reno, Nev., where they will
compete in the Bill Cosby Invitational. This will
mark the third meet of the indoor season for
the Aggies. They have competed in Oklahoma
and Houston so far this season.
Get The Bus Ready For Nationals
In only two weeks of competitive action,
Texas A&M has already had four athletes qual
ify for the NCAA Championships. In Okla
homa, senior Adrien Sawyer automatically
qualified by running the 60-meter hurdles in
8.16 seconds.
After their performances in Houston this
weekend, three more Aggies have become
members on the list of provisional qualifiers.
Senior Larry Wade qualified by running the
60-meter hurdles in 7.85 seconds. In the pole
vault, sophomore Jon Nance’s gold- medal
vault of 17 feet, 1.5 inches was enough to pro
visionally qualify him for nationals as well. In
a blazing 60-meter dash final, senior Billy
Fobbs’ third-place finish of 6.70 seconds
qualified him also.
The Carter Connection
Dallas Carter High School is traditionally
known for its strong football program. Carter
has produced some of the strongest college re
cruits on a yearly basis, including the likes of
New York Giants linebacker Jessie Armstead
and even a few Aggies such as Darren Lewis.
However, football is not Carter’s only pre
mier sport. In 1993 and 1995, Carter won the
state track title, finishing second in 1992 and
1994. Fortunately, four women from those
teams have chosen to continue their careers
here in Aggieland. Under Coach Ted Nelson’s
tutelage, juniors Detrich Clariett and April
King, sophomore Taneshia Canady and fresh
man Valerie Long continue to flourish, and the
best is yet to come. Hopefully, the class of‘02 as
well as future classes will contain members of
this track and field pipeline, otherwise known
as Carter High School.
Made To Be Broken
What is it they say about records—some
thing about them being made to be broken?
Heading into just the third meet of the season,
both school and meet records continue to fall and
it appears nothing is sacred when it comes to
Texas A&M Track and Field’s effect on the record
books. In the first meet of the season, junior Kel
li Schrader set the school record in the women’s
weight throw by throwing 50-5 112, breaking her
own mark of 46-10.75, set just last season.
In Houston this past weekend, three more
records fell. Wade broke the meet record in the
60-meter hurdles, beating the old record of 7.93
seconds. In the pole vault, Nance’s jump tied
the Houston Invitational record. Sophomore
Ann Dwyer, who set the freshman school
record in the 800-meter run last year, improved
on it by setting the Texas A&M record of 2 min
utes, 15.62 seconds in the 800, breaking the old
mark of 2.T6.27 set back in 1990.
Sophomore Richard McDonald has helped Texas
A&M to early success in the pole vault, scoring
points for the Aggies in each of their two meets.
