Aggies Win Big XII South Championship The Texas A&M Football Team captured the Big XII South Championship with a 9-2 record before losing to the Nebras ka Comhuskers in the Big XII Championship game Dec. 6. The Aggies will play against the University of California at Los Angeles in the Cotton Bowl Jan. 1. Reed Arena Reed Arena will be completed in the Spring 1998, and the first event scheduled at the arena is the 1998 Muster ceremony. Construction on the special events center began in Sept. 1995. It will seat 12,500 people and will be used for gradua tion commencements, concerts, basketball games and oth er special events. Features of the arena include 10,800 square feet of meet ing rooms and men’s and women’s locker rooms for home and visiting sports teams. A&M Professor Missing Civil Air Patrol said the search for Norman R. Tilford, a Texas A&M geology professor, was called off last week. Tilford left Bryan Nov. 13 in his private airplane heading for Van Horn, Texas. He departed Coulter Field in his Cessna 180 to meet a group of A&M students on a field trip and never arrived in Van Horn. Davis on ‘Unsolved Mysteries* Texas A&M University graduate Don Davis was profiled on NBC’s “Unsolved Mysteries” in April. Davis was indicted on charges of aggravated sexual as sault in March 1996 for two rapes on the A&M campus in 1995. Davis disappeared from his parent’s home in Hous ton five days before his Aug. 21, 1996 trial was to begin. UPS Strike Settled Most employees of the United States Parcel Ser vice (UPS) returned to work after a 15-day Team sters strike. The union, who pressed for an end to subcontracting and asked UPS to create full-time jobs out of existing part-time positions, were suc cessful in their venture. Bill Jordan, a local UPS worker, went on the strike for higher wages and better benefits. “Our group was working for full-time posi tions,” Jordan said. “Before the strike, we were only contracted part-time and were not eligible for benefits.” O.J. Simpson Libel Case By a unanimous verdict, a Santa Monica jury found O.J. Simpson libel in the deaths of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman. Simpson was ordered to pay $33.5 million dollars in the settlement. Versace dies; Cunanan commits suicide Designer Gianni Versace was killed in Miami Beach in July. Andrew Cunanan committed sui cide after he was charged with the murder. Entertainment Industry Loses Greats Three legends of the entertainment industry died this past year: actors Robert Mitchum and James (Jimmy) Stewart and singer John Denver. Bryant Gumble left his position as anchor on “Today” after fifteen years. British Nanny is Freed Judge Hiller Zobel decided to reduce British nanny Louise Woodward’s conviction to manslaughter in the death of 8-month-old Matthew Eappen in Massachusetts and reduced her sentence to time served. Scientist Clone Sheep The first mammal was cloned from a single adult cell. Keith Cambell, a cell biologist at the Roslin Institute in Scotland, genetically repro duced the sheep and named her “Dolly.” Larry Sims, a junior genetics major, said the cloning has brought international attention to the idea and presented many questions. “When they announced to the world that cloning was indeed a possibility, the Roslin In stitute set a trend of questioning about genetic research,” Sims said. “People are now asking what is next. The answer is unknown but this year has definitely been a landmark in the field of genetic research.” McCaughey Septuplets The miracle of the McCaughey septuplets has been termed “a story of high-tech medicine and old-fashioned faith” by Newsweek. Controversy surrounded the McCaughey’s use of fertility drugs in the conception of the seven newborns, but Kenny and Bobbi McCaughey see the births as a gift from God. “God could have given us one,” the father said at a press conference. “But, God’s entitled to give us seven.
