David Schwimmer stars in new HBO satire ‘Breast!
LOS ANGELES (AP)—HBO’s “Breast
Men,” a satirical look at the rise and fall
of the silicone breast implant, stars Chris
Cooper, David Schwimmer... and a sup
porting cast of many, many breasts.
We see them pre-op small and
post-op large, on brazen display
at society parties and strip joints,
and, in darker moments, as dis
figured symbols of America’s ob
session with bra size.
We even see them oddly disem
bodied. In a clever pseudo-docu
mentary section of the movie, the
camera records women’s com
ments on their breasts, men and
self-image while focusing only on
the body part in question.
Despite the bountiful nudity, the
Film tends more toward the bemused
than the salacious — which helped
Cooper decide to play one of the fic
tionalized surgeons who develops
the implant and watches it turn into
a boom (then bust) industry.
He had to be sold on the project.
“In my first reading, I had some
strong reservations and actually put it
aside for a week and a half,” Cooper
recalled. “I asked my wife, Marianne,
to take a look at it and see what she
thought.... She’s a pretty strong femi
nist, and I did want her take on it.”
With Marianne Leone’s thumbs-
up, Cooper took on screenwriter John
Stockwell’s brittle tale of medicine,
money and mammary glands. Co-
starring Matt Frewer, Louise Fletcher
