T he man who took the nation by
storm with his 1991 hit “Ice, Ice
Baby,” introduces himself as Rob
and says he has turned over a new leaf.
Robbie Van Winkle, better known as
rap star Vanilla Ice, performed at a sold-
out Texas Hall of Fame last night doing
old hits and some new stuff, as well.
Since the days of “Ice, Ice Baby,”
Vanilla Ice said he has just taken some
time off to clear his head.
“I’ve gotten away from the stress,” he
said. “I got married, had a baby — a two
month old baby girl, and have been rac
ing jet skies.”
Ice, who got married this past East
er, said marriage is just one of the many
differences in his life now.
“It (marriage) has changed my life
for the better,” he said. “It’s great.”
Ice is currently working on a new al
bum, which he expects will be released
before this Christmas.
“I’ve been working on and off (on
the album), doing some shows in the
meantime and then been going back
and working on it some more,” he said.
“The album is going to have some old
school hip hop stuff on it for sure —
can’t get away from that, but it’s also go
ing to have some new stuff we did with
a band — some high-energy, stage-div
ing, mosh-pit hip hop. It’s wild.”
The 29-year-old rap star said he
looks back on his life and feels blessed.
“I did “Ice, Ice Baby” when I was 16
years old. So I went through a roller
coaster of life real quick, and I’ve
learned a lot of stuff,” he said. “It was
very stressful because at every high I
had, I had an equal low. At that age it got

to me, but when I turn around and look
at it now, I never expected to get any of
the stuff I did. I achieved something.
“I look back at it now, and I’m a hap
py man.”
Ice said during the stress of his ca
reer, he turned to drugs, but he has
been sober now for three years.
“I got involved with drugs a little bit
there because I wanted to escape from
the reality because the reality to me was
not fun,” he said. “Drugs were very ac
cessible to me.The good thing out of it
is that I found God.”
Ice said his career in rap beg;

Instead of being lead singer in a femme-fatale
rock band, Gem takes the Holograms to Hollywood
in order to market themselves as Playboy Playmates
of the Year.
New twist, new concept; this is what the children
of today want to see, right? Wrong.
There are too many idealists in the television in
dustry who think they have to create something par
allel to our warped reality. Children don’t want to see
reality; that’s not what keeps them entertained. The
draw to any good cartoon is the allure its fantastical
nature brings. If children wanted reality, they could
easily turn to CNN Headline News and catch up on
world events. But the future downfall of children’s’
programming gets worse.
Today on "Picture Pages,” Bill Cosby will show
you how to construct an atomic bomb. His trusty
assistant, Mortimer Sniff-Me-Marker, will help to
draw up the schematics. And after that kids, don’t
forget to stay tuned for “Today’s Special.” On the
next episode, watch Jeff take off his magical hat...
again! This time, Sam the nightwatch guard in a
rage caused by his alcoholism and pending divorce
from Muffy the mouse, the department store call
girl, “accidentally” throws Jeff’s mannequin body
into the trash compactor. How dare she cheat on
me with a piece of plastic!
This is the future of television we have to insure
never reaches fruition. Our kids deserve this and so
much more when searching for something to watch
on the tube.
In the immortal words of Care-a-lot Bear, "Share
... care ... and beat the hell outta anyone who tries
to turn me into a robotic Quickie Koala whose
magic will one day save the people of Earth from
the maniacal Dr. Claw.” OK, so maybe I put a few
extra words into the little fur-covered demon’s
mouth. But honestly, let’s make an effort to remem
ber the past as it was, not try to convert and im
prove millions of children’s’ sacred love affairs with
wholesome entertainment.
