Ford Fest T hree guys, one brotherhood and a night full of laughter and cheers. Omega Psi Phi, a PanHellenic fraternity at Texas A&M, hosts the fifth annual Apollo Night this Saturday in Rudder Theatre. Founded in 1911 on the campus of Howard Uni versity, Omega Psi Phi lives under the principles of manhood, scholarship, perseverance and uplift. In 1991, Omega Psi Phi was established at Texas A&M University. The chapter at Texas A&M consists of three men, Brian Doze, Rodney McCoy and TaVare Newell. • • The program was founded on the focus to generate funds to advance needy and minority students on to col lege. We’re just trying to do our part to make the future a little brighter. ” Brian Doze Omega Psi Phi The money raised from Apollo Night goes to a scholarship, which is awarded to a graduating senior of an ethnic minority from Bryan High School. McCoy, a senior environmental engineering ma jor, said that Apollo Night is an audience interactive talent-show. Similar to Amatuer Night at the historic Apollo Theater in Harlem, N.Y., Apollo Night lets audience members choose the acts they want to see and cut short the acts they do not. “If the audience does not like you, they can “boo" you off the stage,” he said. “It has become a tradition at A&M that everyone looks forward to.” The fraternity usually searches for talent in the Bryan-College Station area, but acts as far away as Houston have auditioned for the show. Local groups Prime-Time Posse and the Fade to Black Dance Team will be two of the 12 groups to perform. “We decide who is worthy enough to be in our show,” Doze said. The fraternity is expecting 750-1000 people at this year’s Apollo Night. That may seem like a huge num ber for three guys to tackle. “Omega Psi Phi is based on men and real broth erhood,” McCoy said. “Not numbers.” The fraternity believes that on a conser vative campus they are a liberal, free-type of organization. The fraternity is also hosting a party after the show in Sbisa Dining Hall. “The program was founded on the focus to gen erate funds to advance needy and minority students on to college,” Doze said. “We’re just trying to do our part to make the future a little brighter.” Apollo Night begins at 7:30 tomorrow night.
