Aggies in control
with two games

Looks great)
S it back, fasten your seat belt
and start jockeying for posi
tion over that imaginary mid
dle line in the back seat, the Aggies
are in the driver’s seat now.
With Texas Tech taking them
selves out of postseason consid
eration and A&M owning the tie
breaker over Oklahoma State, the
Texas A&M Football Team con
trols its own destiny.
With two games left on the
schedule against two teams that are
a combined 6-13 (2-10 in confer
ence), the Aggies appear destined
for San Antonio and the third-
ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers.
But don’t let the records fool
you. The Aggies must face two tra
ditional powers as they travel to
Oklahoma and face Texas at home.
Times have been tough for the
Longhorns and Sooners this sea
son and nothing could help sal
vage a season better than a win
over the Aggies.
Move Over Homer
With a win over the Sooners this
week, Coach R.C. Slocum can move
into a tie with Homer Norton on
A&M’s all-time win list. In nine sea
sons at the helm, Slocum has com
piled a record of 81-23-2. Norton,
who coached the Aggies from 1934-
47, had a mark of 82-53-9.
Norton coached the Aggies to
the school’s only national
championship in 1939 with
stars such as John Kimbrough
and Marshall Robnett.
He has been inducted into the
National Football Foundation
Hall of Fame, the Texas Sports
Hall of Fame and the Texas A&M
University Athletic Hall of Fame.
If Slocum can tie Morton on
Saturday he will have reached the
82-win mark in four fewer sea

To make things tougher,
Oklahoma has returned to the
option roots with new quarte:
back Brandon Daniels who

Parker will be the first ofht
and probably three top runnir
backs the Aggies will face tod
out the season.
Parker ranks No. 9 nations
and third in the Big 12 inrus!
ing at 127 yards per game.
Two weeks from now A&M
gets to try to slow down the
nation’s leading rusher, Texas
Ricky Williams, in what willnx
than likely be his last game in:

early for the NFL.
Then if the Aggies stay on ps
and face Nebraska in the Big 1
championship game they will
have their hands full with Huski
back Aliman Green, the countn
fourth-leading rusher, andquai
terback Scott Frost, who has fa
ly emerged from Tommy Frazie
shadow to become the con-
frence’s fifth-leading rusher. Frol
has run for 852 yards, more
the 833 yards he has thrown for.
Frost has also run for 10 more
touchdowns (14) than he has
thrown for (4).

Aggies sign one of America’s
top high school prospects
By Jeff Webb
Staff writer
With the loss of center Dario
Quesada next season, the Texas
A&M Men’s Basketball Team
will need someone to fill the
middle next season. The Aggies
took a huge step in that direc
tion Wednesday by signing 6-
feet, 10-inch joe White out of
Taft High School in San
Antonio. White weighs in at a
solid 230 pounds and already
has the type of body that will
allow him to contribute early.
"His strong point is the
future,” Taft High School coach
Joel Osterman said. “He’s just
coming into his own and
played well in the second half
of his junior year. He’s got a
Division I body already. He can
shoot the three(-pointer), has a
good post game, and can shoot
off the dribble.”
White is considered the top
prep center in Texas and one of
the top ten nationally by
Gibbon’s All-Star Sports. Asa
junior, White averaged 9.2
points and 6.2 rebounds a game
and led his team to a 33-1
record and a trip to the Texas
State semifinals. Being associ
ated with a winning program
has built character in the senio:
and figures to help him adjust
to the collegiate game.
“A&M seemed like the best
place to go,” Wliite said. Tlie

Rifle &
Harriers sign stellar recruits I
Staff and Wire reports
The Women’s Cross Country
team announced the signing of
four new recruits on Wednesday.
Kristy Bonn (Lockhart), Kayci
Waters (Devine), Melissa Gulli
(Klein), and Lesley Zak (Klein)
have all signed to be coached in
the Big 12 by Greg Hinze.
“This is, already, by far the best
group I have ever signed, and
we’re not through yet,” Coach
Hinze said. “All of these girls are
arguably better than anyone we’ve
ever brought in as freshmen. They
will all have a drastic and immedi
ate impact on our program.”
Waters is the Class 3A
record holder in the 3200 mtu
with a personal best of 10:57.
enters this weekend’s State Go
Country Meet as one of the favorifi
to win the 3A title.
Zak is a former soccer playend
has not run track since her fresl
man year. Bonn goes into tli
weekend’s meet as the favoritei
win the Class 4A title. She also
ranked second in her class acadei

female distance runner in the sta
this year and is the favorite to w
the Class 5A title.
