Library festivities open to public C ommunity Day begins today at 9:30 a.m. at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum with a ceremony featuring former President George Bush and his wife, Barbara, and other dignitaries. The events are free and open to the public until 7 p.m. School children, including international chil dren from Bryan-College Station elementary schools, will join Bush at opening the ceremony. Following the ceremony, the library and museum will be open to the public for tours. Festivities will include musical entertain ment, special readings and booth exhibits. Texas A&M football Coach R.C. Slocum and A&M men’s basketball Coach Tony Barone will participate in readings for children. Aggies over Texas will provide skydiving exhibitions throughout the day. At 8 a.m., Bush will participate in the dedi cation of the College Station I.S.D. Barbara Bush Parent Center at 1200 George Bush Drive. At the dedication, a special painting by Bryan-College Station artist Michael Hodnett will be unveiled. The center will provide assistance for par ents of school children and promote family values and literacy. At 10:30 a.m., Bush will plant the first crepe myrtle tree to initiate the Presidential Corridor beautification project called “Barbara’s Byway.” The project is in conjunction with Brazos Beautiful and focuses on landscaping FM 2818 from George Bush Drive to Easterwood Airport, ending at Villa Maria Road in Bryan. Three 30-gallon Natchez White crepe myr tles will be planted today to begin the $340,000 project. Texas A&M will donate $70,000 to the project, and the City of College Station will donate an additional $50,000. Crepe myrtles were chosen because Bryan- College Station is the official crepe myrtle capi- tol of Texas.
