AMBER WOOLSEY
A&M MIDDLE BLOCKER
Santa Barbara all vied for Woolsey’s
talent, but A&M won out.
“My mom knew coach Corbelli and
she knew that I would be looked after,
plus A&M had the best coaching avail
able and was academically superior to
any of the other places that I was real
ly looking at,” Woolsey said.
In moving to Texas, Woolsey had to
make some adjustments to the typical
life that most Texans take for granted.
"The weather is so hot and humid
here in Texas and when it ices over
here there is no school. Needless to
say that is not the case in Minnesota,”
Woolsey said.
Like most students and especially
student athletes Woolsey, faced some
tough chal
lenges in her
first year of col
lege.
“Juggling my
academics,
being on the
road all the time
and making up
classes that we
miss on road
trips was defi-
nitely
lenge for me,”
Woolsey said.
Apparently Woolsey adjusted just
fine as she received a distinguished
student academic honor in the spring
of 1997.
Like most athletes Woolsey recog
nizes that there are some things she
needs to work on.
“I need to become more of a threat
when I am out on the court,” Woolsey
said. “1 need to let the opponent know
that they should be afraid.”
Woolsey and the Aggie volleyball
team take on the Texas Tech Red
Raiders and the Baylor Bears this
weekend at G. Rollie White Coliseum.

U nbelievable! Baylor upsets Texas
23-21 for its first Big 12 win and
only the second win of the sea
son. It just goes to show you, that’s why
they play the games. After the Bears
lost to a meek Iowa State squad, it
appeared Baylor owned sole possession
of the Big 12 cellar. But with the Bears
adding to the Longhorns’ downward
spiral, both Texas and Iowa State are
down in the muck and mire of a 1-4
conference record.
Papa Papa Ooo Mow Mow.
Nebraska’s coach Tom Osborne
reached a coaching milestone with
Saturday’s 69-7 victory over the
Sooners. Osborne obtained 250 wins as
a head coach, becoming the fastest
ever to do so. The legendary Joe
Paterno, coach of the Penn State
Nittany Lions, won his 250th game
after 320 contests. Osborne achieved
the feat in just 302 games.
Bringing Down the House.
After Baylor’s thrilling 23-21 upset
of the Texas Longhorns, the Baylor
students tore down the goal posts in
the south endzone. Despite several
police officers manning the field, the
crazed Bear fanatics hung on the
posts until they came crashing down.
The mangled souvenir was placed in
front of the Baylor Administration
building, for fans to sign. If it can be
repaired, Baylor officials said they
plan to put the post back up with sig
natures intact.
Half Court Offense.
In the Wildcats 13-2 win over Texas
Tech, Kansas State’s offense only
crossed midfield once. K-state’s two
scores came after the stingy Wildcat-D
forced turnovers in Tech territory.
And Tech’s offense managed just 117
yards and six first downs. The Red
Raiders failed to get a first down on 12
of 17 possessions. The only time Tech
managed to cross the goal line was
when it forced K-State quarterback
Michael Bishop to throw the ball away
from his own endzone for a safety.
Lions and Tigers and
Bears, Oh My!
The last time Missouri beat the
University of Colorado, Ronald Reagan
was in office and the Swami was just
nine years old. But on Saturday,
Missouri ended its 12-year losing
streak, downing the Buffaloes 41-31.
With three straight victories,
including last week’s double-overtime
win over previously unbeaten
Oklahoma State, Mizzou secured its
first winning season since 1983. And
the University of Colorado posted its
fourth loss in the same season for the
first time since 1988.
Barry, Please Come
Back to Norman.
After a 3-6 start and a 69-7 shellack
ing by Nebraska, Sooner coach John
Blake may be looking for a new job in
three weeks. Nebraska has won the last
seven contests, outscoring the Sooners
265-61. Not since the days of Barry
Switzer has OU dominated the rivalry.
Ironically Switzer, currently the
Dallas Cowboy’s coach, may be ridden
out of Big D at seasons end.
During his coaching stint in
Norman, everyone in Oklahoma
thought Switzer was a reincarnation of
God. So Barry, pack your bags, accept
the $1-million contract buyout and
move back to Norman.
