This NBA venture will definitely
be an experiment for other
leagues. It is not known if this idea
could make a smooth transition to
other professional sports. Women
referees in the NFL may seem like
a foreign idea to some and almost
sacrilegious to many die-hard ma
cho-men football fans. Heck,
many don’t like the idea of Lesley
Visser or any woman on the side
lines dLiring the game.
But as long as women know the
rules of the game, why can’t they
give it a shot? Oftentimes, we let
our stereotypes and traditions
stand in the way of change. So
what if a woman has never con
quered professional officiating?
That is what change is all about. It
took the Los Angeles Raiders hir
ing Art Shell to break the color bar
rier in professional football coach
ing, maybe this will break the
gender barrier in officiating.
It is not only the NFL that
women should look to as the new
frontier, but Major League Base
ball as well. Right now it seems as
if the only credentials required to
umpire in baseball is a receding
hairline and a huge pot belly. So

Throw the Game Plan Out
The Window
Oklahoma State owed its explo
sive 6-0 start in part to the Cow
boys’ ability to hold onto the ball.
Prior to Saturday’s loss to Mis
souri, OSU had a turnover-to-
takeaway rating of + 10 with 18
takeaways. But against Missouri,
the Cowboys put the ball on the
carpet four times and recovered
just one turnover.
The Cowboys also failed to stop
the run, something it did during
its six-game winning streak. OSU
had held opponents to 360 yards
on 164 carries, a 2.2 yards-per-car-
ry average, through six games. But
the Tigers rushed for 221 yards on
41 carries, an astounding 5.39
yards per attempt.
I Heard That.
Texas Tech place kicker Tony
Rogers, after kicking a game-win
ning 47-yard field goal with 19
seconds remaining in the 16-13
victory over Texas A&M:
“Coach (Spike) Dykes always
talks about making the best of
your opportunities,” Rogers said
“And I got the chance to do that.”
Oklahoma sophomore quar
terback Brandon Daniels, who
has played at defensive back
since high school, after his rush
ing for 85 yards and scoring the
Sooners only touchdown of the
day in a 27-7 loss to Kansas State:

Kile to test free
HOUSTON (AP) —The agent for
Houston pitcher Darryl Kile says
the Astros ace plans to file for free
agency, although he did not do so
on the first day possible.
Players eligible to file for free
agency could begin filing on
Monday.
“We didn’t file (Monday) for no
other reason than Darryl is on the
road and I haven’t been able to talk
to him,” agent Barry Axelrod said.
“That’s the plan (to file).
