Hopgood
Continued from Page 1
“I feel that with him as com
mandant, the Corps is in safe
hands into the next century.”
Hopgood returned to Texas
A&M in 1996 after he was chosen
as the commandant.
Hopgood first came to A&M
as a student in 1961. He planned
to stay for a year before attending
the Naval Academy.
“I just fell in love with A&M,”
Hopgood said. “The atmosphere
of the campus and the experi
ences I had in the Corps changed
my mind about the Naval Acad
emy. I learned leadership and be
came a part of the Corps, a very
pride-filled and spirited organi
zation.”
Hopgood, Class of'65, gradu
ated from Texas A&M with a de
gree in physical education.
In 1976, he earned a Master
Degree in Education from the
University of Virginia at Char
lottesville.
Hopgood’s active service ca
reer in the United States Marine
Corps included three tours in
Vietnam. He was awarded the
Purple Heart for wounds suffered
in combat. He also participated
in Operation Restore Hope in So
malia.
Hopgood retired from the
United States Marine Corps as a
Major General in 1996, after
completing 31 years of military
service. His last active-duty as
signment was as president of the
Marine Corps University in
Quantico, Virginia.
Hopgood grew up in North
Dakota and said he has been in
spired by many people, includ
ing his parents and a high-school
football coach.
“The smartest decision I ever
made in life was picking the right
parents,” he said. “I was raised in

that were not fulfilled.”
With the numerous awards
and decorations, Hopgood said
his greatest accomplishment is
being a father and a husband,
jobs that present day-to-day
challenges, but he take pride in
his success in both.
Hopgood said he wants cadets
to live the life stated by the former
A&M President Lawrence Sullivan
Ross as being a soldier, a states
man and a knightly gentlemen.
“A soldier is ready to defend
his rights," Hopgood said. “A
statesman is prepared to enter
into his community and a gen
tleman is a person who deals
honestly and openly with the is
sues of his time and has the char
acter to influence others.”
Hopgood said that he hopes
students will take full advantage

A wave of excitement is rolling through GenRad. Why?
Because manufacturers, like our employees, are feel
ing the force of our ingenuity like never before. Industry
leaders in transportation, communications, aerospace,
computers and contract manufacturing are relying on
information from our custom-designed, in-line test sys
tems to help them continuously improve quality and max
imize production. Gone are the days when our test
equipment was used only at the end of the line to detect
defects. Today, our systems work throughout the process,
and enable users to find and troubleshoot problems
immediately. What's more, talented technical profes
sionals rely on us to provide them with the challenges
and rewards that come with creating
innovative hardware, software and
service solutions across the entire
manufacturing and after-market
service spectrum. And with dou
ble-digit growth, enhanced
offerings and focused vision,
we are more than able to do just
that - and we plan to do so well
into the next century. So renew
the ambition and entrepreneurial
spirit that made you the talent that
you are. Join forces with GenRad.
