Hopgood first came to A&M as a student in 1961. He planned to stay for a year before attending the Naval Academy. “I just fell in love with A&M,” Hopgood said. “The atmosphere of the campus and the experi ences I had in the Corps changed my mind about the Naval Acad emy. I learned leadership and be came a part of the Corps, a very pride-filled and spirited organi zation.” Hopgood, Class of'65, gradu ated from Texas A&M with a de gree in physical education. In 1976, he earned a Master Degree in Education from the University of Virginia at Char lottesville. Hopgood’s active service ca reer in the United States Marine Corps included three tours in Vietnam. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds suffered in combat. He also participated in Operation Restore Hope in So malia. Hopgood retired from the United States Marine Corps as a Major General in 1996, after completing 31 years of military service. His last active-duty as signment was as president of the Marine Corps University in Quantico, Virginia. Hopgood grew up in North Dakota and said he has been in spired by many people, includ ing his parents and a high-school football coach. “The smartest decision I ever made in life was picking the right parents,” he said. “I was raised in " > i “I just fell in love with A&M.” M.T. I never had any reasonable wants that were not fulfilled.” With the numerous awards and decorations, Hopgood said his greatest accomplishment is being a father and a husband, jobs that present day-to-day challenges, but he take pride in his success in both.
