If You Have Something To Sell, Remember: The Battalion Classifieds Can Do It Call 845-0569 Thursday • October2ldrsda Furtick Continued from Page 7 Obviously Ruth had a pros perous and successful career, but if The Bambino was roaming right field at Yankee Stadium today, instead of in 1930, there wouldn’t be a record left intact by the end of his career. Ruth played in an era of baseball before there was a divisional struc ture. The American and National Leagues simply sent their respec tive champions to the World Series. So in Ruth’s day, it was not unlikely for a team to have a 15-game lead at the All-Star Break, as was the case for the Yankees many times during the Babe’s career. New York won seven pennants in Ruth’s tenure by an average of 8.5 games per season. There was n’t a lot of pressure on him to carry the team in the second half of these seasons. The Yankees could jump out to a big early lead in the standings and just cruise until October. But in those years when New York found itself in a pennant race late in the season, Ruth was unstoppable. In 15 seasons with the Bronx Bombers, Ruth played in a legiti mate pennant race eight times. In those years he hit .360 with a .749 slugging percentage and .494 on- base percentage while averaging 49 home runs, 142 RBI and 147 runs scored. All of these numbers eclipse Ruth’s career averages and give validity to the theory that he would sparkle in today’s league structure. With eight teams going to the postseason instead of two as in Ruth’s day, almost every team has some shot at making the playoffs. The Babe would be involved in more pres sure situations like the ones he dominated 60 yeas ago. Another piece of Ruth lore that is often overlooked when com paring baseball’s greats is that he pitched almost exclusively for the first six years of his career while playing for the Boston Red Sox. Add 3,000 at bats to Ruth’s statis tics, and he would have undoubt edly put his records well out of the reach of any challengers, ever. Interestingly enough, the Babe could pitch. While with Boston, he went 89-46 with a 2.04 ERA. Twice he won 20 games in a season, as well as pitching two 300-inning sea sons. He also threw 105 complete Ferrell Continued from Page 7 Sophomore Andy Vincent will make his second start of the season at tackle in place of Spikes, and junior Rex Tucker will make his first career start in place of Ruhman. Junior cornerback Shun Horn is also expected to miss the game with a bad hamstring. Mass Subs Coming Up Big Throughout the season, A&M has been playing around 50 play ers a game. With major injuries hitting the team in the past cou ple of weeks, the experience that many of the backups gained ear lier in the season is even more important now. Coach R.C. Slocum said the team is able to deal with the rash of injuries because they have prepared for it. “Injuries are an inevitable part of diis game,” Slocum said. “You go into each year not knowing who Fall/Spring Internships WITH Northwestern Mutual Life* The Quiet Company hllp:/www.NorthwesternMutual.com Fortune’s “Most Admired” Company "America's Top Internships” - one of 1997's top ten intership programs "Jobs 96” -Insurance sales compensation averaged $50,000 per year, increasing to $70,000 after 10 years.
