Continued from Page 7
Obviously Ruth had a pros
perous and successful career,
but if The Bambino was roaming
right field at Yankee Stadium
today, instead of in 1930, there
wouldn’t be a record left intact
by the end of his career.
Ruth played in an era of baseball
before there was a divisional struc
ture. The American and National
Leagues simply sent their respec
tive champions to the World Series.
So in Ruth’s day, it was not unlikely
for a team to have a 15-game lead
at the All-Star Break, as was the
case for the Yankees many times
during the Babe’s career.
New York won seven pennants
in Ruth’s tenure by an average of
8.5 games per season. There was
n’t a lot of pressure on him to
carry the team in the second half
of these seasons. The Yankees
could jump out to a big early lead
in the standings and just cruise
until October.
But in those years when New
York found itself in a pennant
race late in the season, Ruth was
unstoppable.
In 15 seasons with the Bronx
Bombers, Ruth played in a legiti
mate pennant race eight times. In
those years he hit .360 with a .749
slugging percentage and .494 on-
base percentage while averaging
49 home runs, 142 RBI and 147
runs scored. All of these numbers
eclipse Ruth’s career averages
and give validity to the theory
that he would sparkle in today’s
league structure. With eight
teams going to the postseason
instead of two as in Ruth’s day,
almost every team has some shot
at making the playoffs. The Babe
would be involved in more pres
sure situations like the ones he
dominated 60 yeas ago.
Another piece of Ruth lore that
is often overlooked when com
paring baseball’s greats is that he
pitched almost exclusively for the
first six years of his career while
playing for the Boston Red Sox.
