But with the Florida Marlins’ clinching of the National League Pennant Tuesday in Atlanta, you can go ahead and throw the Great Game in the crapper with the rest of the country. I realize now I’ve been looking the other way my entire life trying not to notice the greed and filth associated with our national pas time. But with Florida on its way to the World Series in only its fifth season of existence, I finally have to admit baseball has allowed teams to get caught up in the big money and lose sight of the game. Last year the Marlins finished in third place in the NL East Division, 16 games behind the Atlanta Braves, at 80-82. It was a good year for the expansion team. They almost finished the season at .500 while gaining a lot of respect around the league as a competitive team. A year later Florida was on its way to the Fall Classic. They eclipsed the 1996 New York Mets as the youngest expansion team to make it to the Series (five years to eight years), they swept the San Francisco Giants in the Divisional Series and defeated the perennial NL champion Braves in the NLCS. The American dream, the Cinderella story, the playoff underdog making a champi onship run—it sounds like a fairy tale, but it’s not. The 1997 Marlins exhibit every thing that’s wrong with baseball. They’re an overpaid expansion team who made it to the playoffs by being the best team not to win anything: a.k.a. the Wild Card. They have an open-checkbook owner who dropped so much dough in the off-season, he’s been forced to put the team up for sale. How proud Marlins fans must be. It’s sad that Florida has to become the scapegoat for the ongoing mistakes of Major League Baseball, but somebody was bound to reveal the shortcomings of the sport. Start with the Wild Card. This is the biggest fluke in professional sports. I can understand why the NFL has extra playoff spots for lower ranked teams, they only play 16 games. One or two mistakes and good teams could easily miss the playoffs. Baseball was created with such a long season to eliminate that problem. After 162 games, the best teams are going to win the divi sions. So why reward a club, that could theoretically have a losing record, with an opportunity to play for a championship? They didn’t win anything; they have as much a right to play in October as I do.
