The Texas A&M Cross Country
Team faces its toughest competi
tion of the year when they hit the
starting line in Greenville, South
Carolina at the Furman
Invitational tomorrow.
The Aggie men posted their
fourth straight team victory last
week at the North Texas Pre-
Region meet, and are looking
healthier and faster than ever. The
stiffest competition of the year lies
in wait for the Aggies in Greenville.
“This weekend will be by far the
most challenging meet we’ve gone
to in my five years here,” Coach
Greg Hinze said. “In theory, they
take the top 30 teams in the coun
try into this meet and we were for
tunate enough to be one of the
teams they selected.”
Junior Stephen Erath said the
meet is a huge opportunity for
the Aggies.
“This is our first chance to run
against unusually strong competi
tion for us. This is the biggest
meet this team’s gone to in years,
so it’s an opportunity for us to run
against teams that are respected
all over the nation,” Erath said.
“This maybe gives us a chance to
win some respect.”
Injuries were a factorial

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) —
Dean Smith retired as basketball
coach at North Carolina on
Thursday, a job that lasted 36
years, produced two national titles
and raised him to the pinnacle of
his profession.
His longtime assistant Bill
Guthridge takes over with little time
to waste: Practice for the upcoming
season starts in nine days.
The winningest college basket
ball coach of all time said he was
80 percent sure last week he want
ed to step down; after the week
end, it was 100 percent.
“This timing is something I
believed in all along,’’ said Smith,
who broke Adolph Rupp’s career
victory mark of 876 last season
during the NCAA tournament. “I
certainly wouldn’t want to say I’ll
coach this year and resign after
the season. Can you imagine how
many rocking chairs at different
places I would get and them all
acting like they likeyou?!
that all too often.”
