With new term paper law in effect, students disco
severity of abusing the Internet for schoolwo
By Michael Schaub
Staff writer
C heating is not just a violation
of the Aggie Code of Honor
anymore — it is an infraction
of state law.
When Texas Gov. George W.
Bush signed House Bill 762 into
law this June, it became a misde
meanor to sell term papers to oth
er students who intend to pass it
off as their own. The law went into
effect Sept. 1 and violations are
punishable by a $500 fine.
The law is one response to what
some educators say is a burgeoning
problem—cheating on the Internet.
Web sites like Cheater.com,
http://www.cheater.com, make it
easier for students to exchange
their work with one another on the
Internet.
“Are you sick and tired of taking
notes for your boring History class?”
the Cheater.com Web site asks. “We
have a collection of book reports
that may have taken as much as
four hours of your time.”
The Cheater.com site, main
tained by an anonymous high
school student, does not sell term
papers, and claims it discourages
plagiarism among its users.
“For once and for all, all you
should gain from this site is other
people’s ideas,” the site reads. “We
are not here to promote plagia
rism. If you turn in a paper from
this site as your own, you are hurt
ing yourself.
“Cheater.com is meant to be
used as a resource.”
The site also contains this
warning for contributors of papers
to the site:
“Also, when you are sending in a
report, be sure to keep your name off
of it. We sometimes miss the name
part, and it may be possible for your
name to remain on a report, (where)
a teacher could see it... ”
The Yahoo! search engine lists al
most 40 addresses dedicated to “term
paper assistance.” One such site,
School Sucks, http://www.school-
sucks.com, boasts “30 meg[abytes] of
term papers.”
“Do your selves a favor,” the School
Sucks site advises. “Don’t turn these
papers in. Your teachers, professors
and the media are always visiting
School Sucks. Use them for ideas. Use
them for the bibliographies.”
School Sucks has a page titled
“Plagiarism Sucks,” and warns stu
dents that their professors likely
know about the Web site.
The site’s authors liken the in
formation available on the site to
a library.
