STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — One
game doesn’t make a season,
although it has sure stirred things
up around Oklahoma State.
A 42-16 victory over Texas on
Saturday moved the Cowboys into
the Associated Press rankings for
the first time since 1988. It also
made coach Bob Simmons a hot
commodity — media from around
the country called Monday wanti
ng a piece of his time.
It is all new for a program that
has not had a winning season
since Barry Sanders’ won a
Heisman Trophy for the Cowboys
in 1988.
“New is good,” Simmons said
at his weekly news conference.
“It’s just how you handle it. I’ve
been there before in my experi
ence, and I’m just going to try to
relate to my team how you deal
with the newness of being 5-0 and
being successful.”
Simmons was an assistant for
eight years at Colorado and owns a
national championship ring from
his time there. His Oklahoma State
team is not nearly as deep, talent
ed or experienced as most of the
Buffalo teams he coached, so there
is reason to wonder how the
Cowboys will handle things this
week.
Before last weekend, Simmons
said, the Cowboys were simply
considered an improved team.
The victory over Texas — a team
that last year beat OSU by 57
points — gave Oklahoma State
legitimacy, he said.
“I think this game answered the
questions for a lot of people,” OSU
safety Trent Alexander said.
It also, no doubt, raised expec
tations. Oklahoma State (5-0, 2-0
Big 12) is ranked No. 20 and now
people are talking about the
prospects of an eight or even nine-
victory season.
“I think our kids expect to win,
too, and that’s the most important
thing,” Simmons said. “I think
they know how, they’ve proved
that. Now what they’ve got to
prove is can you continue
that? That is the challenge.
They will get an idea Sa:
night when No. 24 Colorad
0-1) visits. The Buffaloe
struggled all year, particula
offense — they have jus
offensive touchdown in the[
quarters.
But Simmons believes Co
is much better than the recoi
cates. He expects the
passing game to provide a sn
for a defense that has show,
stop the run, but has not real
challenged through the air.
He also expects the Cowb
be able to wade through
hoopla and keep their mind
business at hand.
“I would hope this
matured enough that they
how we got to be 5-0 wasti.
great practice habits and si
to the discipline of practio
the fundamentals,” Simmon:
“That will be my job as the
coach, and my assistants’jot
