The Student Counseling Service is taking a day to give A&M students a chance to control and manage their stress with “Beat the Hell Outta Stress Day. The program will be held today in the Memor ial Student Center and at Rudder Fountain. Dr. Andy Smith, head of the Student Counsel ing Service (SCS), said the program is designed to help students deal with stress before it be comes a problem. “We envision it as a way to introduce students to methods of managing stress,” Smith said. “Stress can end up just making a mess of things if not dealt with properly.” Christina Diecidue, an SCS psychology in tern, has helped organize “Beat the Hell Outta Stress Day.” “We’ve wanted to do something like this for a while,” Diecidue said. “It will help us introduce the SCS to the student body and it will help with managing stress.” “Beat the Hell Outta Stress Day” consists of three parts. Booths and exhibits, open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., are set up to inform students about stress and the ways to relieve it. Exhibits demonstrating stress management include a biofeedback machine, relaxation train ing, massage therapy, music, humor and pets. Smith said the booths and exhibits give a kind of carnival atmosphere to the event. “The exhibits will be fun and interactive, with something to offer,” Smith said. One of the more interesting exhibits being of fered during “Beat the Hell Outta Stress Day” are the Graffiti Boards. The boards will allow students to get stress off their chest, by writing it out on a board. Cynthia Quick, a SCS psychology intern said she is looking forward to seeing the graffiti boards in action. “It’ll be a great chance to let stuff out,” Quick said. “I just hope everyone keeps it reasonable.” In addition to the exhibits, the SCS is supply ing stress balls, and the Austin School of Massage Therapy is providing free massages. Diecidue said the massage therapy should be one of the more popular items. “I think everyone will want to take advantage of it,” Diecidue said. The yell leaders will be participating in a se ries of stress reducing yells starting at 12:15 p.m. at Rudder Fountain. The second part of the day’s festivities will in clude a series of workshops held in the MSC from u We’ve wanted to do something like this for a while. Smith said “How to Manage Your Stress," isthf workshop to attend if you can only attend one. “It will offer an overview of a variety ofwaysic reduce stress in students’ lives,” Smith said. “How ever, all the workshops are worth attending.’ The third part of “Beat tire Hell Outta Stress Dav' 1 will be tine anxiety disorders screening program. The program will start with free anxiety dis orders screenings and end with a presentatior on the disorders. Dr. Ted Stachowiak, Associate Director of SCS, said the anxiety disorders screenings are one of the most beneficial aspects of the day. “We can help students diagnose a possl anxiety disorder and put them in the right direi tion to seek help,” Stachowiak said. Diecidue said such disorders are moreprew lent than students might think. “A bad experience with grades or a relate ship can bring on anxiety about such Diecidue said. Diecidue said the hour-long workshops will not be in the typical, classroom style. “It won’t be just someone sitting there talking at you,” Diecidue said. “The experience will be interactive and try to get people involved.” “A person can have a natural tendencyra wards it, and an event will occur bringing it toth surface,” Stachowiak said. “The most impoi thing is recognizing it.” Both Diecidue and Stachowiak said stuc can do a lot to deal with anxiety. “One of the things we will be covering isth ways a person can deal with stress by i selves,” Diecidue said. “If one can correct certain behaviors, itcai go a long way to helping relieve anxiety,”Sta chowiak said.
