The Aggies have evened their record in Big 12 play to 1-1 with a strong performance over the Oklahoma Sooners this past Saturday. While the Aggies can take solace in their victory on Saturday they have a big weekend of volley ball ahead of them. They will go by bus to Baylor for a Friday night match against Baylor and then jump on a plane for a trip to the flat treeless plains of West Texas to play Texas Tech University on Saturday night. Both opponents according to assistant coach John Corbelli are capable of giving the Aggies a big test. “Both are well coached solid teams, they both can beat you if you are not on top of your game.” The Aggies will attempt to take revenge on Baylor for a very costly loss at the end of the 1996 season. The Aggies were poised to receive a first round bye in the NCAA tour nament last year when Baylor hung a loss on the team at the start of November, which likely cost them that bye. “There is no doubt that Baylor has a good squad,” Cobelli said. “ We went into the Ferrel Center last year tired and unprepared and we came out with a loss.” That victory was only the time that Baylor had beaten A&M in the all-time series compared to 37 victories for the Aggies. The Aggies are not the only team that has a tough weekend ahead of them. The Texas Tech Red Raiders will be hosting both The University of Texas and Texas A&M this weekend. The Red Raiders have been relatively unsuccessful against both teams over the years. The Horns have posted 44-7-2 record against raiders. The Aggies have posted a 32-20 record against the Raiders, The Aggies do not plan to take the Red Raiders lightly though according to Corbelli. “They have a solid defense and they are very quick so we will have to be pre pared.” Texas Tech has had an impres sive start to the season. The Raiders have posted a 15-1 record along with a 2-0 start in confer ence play. The Raiders are led by their setter Lisa Hilgers who recently broke the schools all-time assist record as well as outside hit ter Cristine Martin. According to Corbelli things are on schedule for the Aggies seasor in terms of team improvement, “We are learning to play strong in all phases of the game, 1 think that we are well balanced team right now.” Rock, R&B band needs new drummer for upcoming gigs. Local Radio News from the newsroom of campus and community news 8:04 a.m. Monday through Friday during NPR Morning Edition on KAMU-FM 90.9 College Station / Bryan the Baltimore Orioles flourished against the Seattle Mariners’ inad equate bullpen and took com mand of their AL division series. Stymied by Jamie Moyer’s off- speed pitches for half the game Thursday, Baltimore went ahead immedi ately after the left-hander was forced out with an elbow injury. The Orioles’ sec ond straight 9-3 victory sent them home with a 2-0 lead in the best-of-5 series. Baltimore can advance to the AL champi onship series for a second straight year with a win Saturday in Game 3 at Camden Yards. The Orioles, who got homers from Harold Baines and Brady Anderson, are 9- 4 against the Mariners this season. With the Mariners leading 2-1 in the fifth inning, Moyer gave up a two-out single to Mike Bordick, walked Anderson on four pitches and threw a ball well out of the strike zone to Roberto Alomar. After a discussion at the mound with Seattle manager Lou Piniella, Moyer left the game with a strained left elbow. That spelled trouble for the Mariners, whose bullpen blew 27 save opportunities this season. Paul Spoljaric came in, and Alomar hit a drive that glanced off the glove of a leaping Ken Griffp Jr. at the center field wall. Ttii double scored two runs and Baltimore ahead to stay. Moyer was 5-1 lifetime agains his former team — including \\ this season with a 2.92 ERA. Th time, he allowed five hits and walk, striking out two in 4 2 innings. In the seventh, Anderson fo lowed a walk to Bordick with two-run shot off Bobby Ayala foil 5-2 lead. Seattle got a run in it half on an RBI single by pinch-hil ter Rob Ducey. The Orioles pulled away in thi eighth, scoring four runs as crowd of 59,309 began to bootlu home team. Ayala walked Baine intentionally to load the bases then forced in a run by walk Lenny Webster on a 3-2 pit Bordick followed with a two- single and Anderson greeted Norm Charlton with an RBI- ble to make it 9-3. Baltimore starter 5 Erickson allowed three runs seven hits in 6 2-3 innings to his first playoff win in seven careei appearances. He’s 3-0 in foi starts against Seattle this season. Seattle’s first four batters against Erickson produced a 2-0 lead. Joey Cora led off with an infield single and took third Roberto Kelly’s double offthewall in right-center. Griffey and E Martinez followed with groundouts. Baines got Baltimore to 2 the second with an opposite- drive to left. Sports Briefs U,B. The men are lead by junior Scott Lengefeld who was named the Big 12 male runner of the week this week after winning the Rice Invitational two weeks ago. The women are coming off their best finish of the year after taking second at the Rice Invitational. They are led by Millie Ondras, Ann Dwyer and Karl Wyatt who finished nos. 8-'0 at Rice. “This meet will give us a chance to run on the Regional Course,” coach Greg Henzie said in a press release. “It will also give us a chance to face some of the region al teams we won’t see again until the regional meet. I’m optimistic that we will improve this week and and continue to have the success we’ve had so far this season.” 1 Jets’ Glenn gets new contract Former Texas A&M standout Aaron Glenn agreed to a five- year, $19.3 million contract extension Tuesday with the New York Jets making him the sec ond-highest paid defensive back in the NFL behind Dallas Deion Sanders. Glenn, who was the 12th over all pick in the 1994 NFL draft, was in the last year of his original four-year, $4 million deal. Jets Head Coach Bill Parcells said the high salary is a sign of the times, but he prefers to pay proven players like Glenn as opposed to rookies coming out of the draft. “We are trying to keep the guys we think are good players," Parcells said. “Hopefully we can be in better position this offseason” The five-foot, nine-inch, 185- pound Glenn does not have an interception this year and has only five for his career as a result of rarely being tested. He also has excelled as a kickoff returner averaging 30.9 yards-per-retum this season and 23.3 yards-per- return for his career.
