than two runs — a trend that continued in Game 1
of the division series when Atlanta won 2-1 behind
Greg Maddux.
“This was a little bit fluky,’’ second baseman
Tony Graffanino said. “It will probably be close
next time we play.’’
It better be for the Astros’ sake. The Braves, who
got a three-run homer from Jeff Blauser, lead the
best-of-5 series 2-0 and can finish off Houston with
a victory Friday at the Astrodome.
“It’s nice to be two-up, but it’s like investing,’’
Blauser said. “You’re not guaranteed results tomor
row because of what happened yesterday and
today. We have to push on and punch them out.”
Hampton, who had only two walks in 17 innings
during his final two starts of the regular season,
walked four in the first four innings and got worse
after getting two outs in the fifth.
With the score 3-all, he threw 16 balls in an 18-
pitch span, resulting in consecutive walks to
Chipper Jones, Fred McGriff, Javy Lopez and
Andruw Jones, forcing home the go-ahead run.
Hampton, who threw only 38 strikes in 87 pitches,
was replaced by Mike Magnante, who gave up a
two-run single to pinch-hitter Greg Colbrunn that
made it 6-3.
Colbrunn’s hit ended an 0-for-25 postseason
slump by Atlanta pinch-hitters, dating back to the
’95 World Series.
“I was just trying to be a little too perfect and it
wound up costing me,” Hampton said. “1 probably
just tried to nibble too much.”
Atlanta added five runs in the sixth — four
unearned — once again striking with two outs. Fred
McGriff had an RBI single and two more scored
when first baseman Jeff Bagwell let a high throw
deflect off his glove for an error. Danny Bautista
followed with a two-run single, though the inning
mercifully ended for the Astros when he was
thrown out trying to stretch it to a double.
It has been a miserable series for Bagwell, who
had 43 homers, 135 RBIs and 31 stolen bases during
the regular season. He is 0-for-8 with five strike
outs, including three on Wednesday.
“Obviously, it’s a little disappointing,” he said.
“But you’ve got to shrug it off and go get ’em Friday.”
Craig Biggio, Derek Bell and Bagwell, the top
infield single in the ninth Wednesday. “Guysgo. J
into funks.”
“That could change in a day, in an at-bat,”
Bagwell added. “It could happen Friday.”
Tom Glavine, improving his postseason record
to 8-9, threw a staggering 117 pitches through six
innings, allowing all three runs and five hits. The
Braves’ bullpen got some work, with Mike Gather
throwing two scoreless innings and Mark Wohlers
finishing.
“We’ve done a good job so far” with Houston's
top three hitters, Glavine said. “Obviously, when
you look at this ballclub, those guys are very dan
gerous. You don’t want to let those three guys beat
you, particularly Bagwell.”
The key, Glavine said, has been keeping Biggio
off base.
“That make it a little easier to face Bagwell
when you’re in a situation where you know the
solo homer isn’t going to hurt you,” the Atlanta
pitcher said. “Hopefully, we can win one more
game and not let them get in position where thej | m
can beat us.” samo.
Blauser, hitting .588 in his career against 1 J-" M
Hampton, gave the Braves a 3-0 lead in the thi , ‘ t| ^ ’
with his fourth postseason homer. After Glavine sin* ^ t0 a ,
gled and Kenny Lofton walked, Blauser hit a 383l Fredrick
foot drive into the left-field seats despite a Wriglej Fhe Agg

Field-like wind sweeping across Turner Field
Houston tied it in the fourth, taking advantageoLy^ a
Glavine’s wildness. Two walks set up Brian Ausmu C L e royar
for a two-run double, the ball sailing just beyoo S6tit j e
the glove of Ryan Klesko as he dove in the left-fiel 1
corner. Ausmus scored on Hampton’s hit to right.
Biggio squandered a chance to get the Astro
back in the game in the sixth with two on andtw
outs. On a 3-1 pitch, Biggio lofted a fly thr,
appeared to be drifting toward the right-
stands, but Andruw Jones leaned into the crowd!
make the catch.
Atlanta opened the series by becoming thefirf
team since 1974 to win a postseason gamewithw
hits. The Braves continued to make full use of the
hits in Game 2, piling up their 13 runs on 10 hits.
“We haven’t gotten many hits, but the name
the game is timely hits,” Blauser said. “It’s wl
you get them that counts.”
