It is one of the first ways to get involved in A&M.” Poland said involvement and participation in elec tions can help students improve the University. However, he said students need to stay involved after elections are over. Nolan Barkhouse, Class of '98 president and a se nior international studies and political science ma jor, said voters need to be informed about candi dates. “Don’t be afraid to introduce yourself to candi dates,” he said. “Go get to know them so you can be informed. Voters must reach out because of the size of this campus — candidates can’t reach everyone.” Barkhouse said freshman elections are important to a class because it is the first time freshmen make decisions about the University. “The class council lays the groundwork for the fu ture of the class, from the class gift to the Ring Dance and Elephant Walk,” he said. “Each class wants to leave something great for the University, so now is the time to pick the best students for the job.” Barkhouse said the size of A&M and the freshman class should not deter students from voting. “Your vote really does count,” he said. “I’ve seen elections won by 30 votes. I think in a lot of ways even if you don’t know the candidate or the person, by the effort they put into being elected you can gain insight into the effort they will put into their job after elec tion.” Students can vote at the MSC, Evans Library, Blocker, Kleberg, Zachry and Wehner buildings, the Underground, the Commons Lobby, the Student Recreation Center and Duncan Dining Center. Student, dean exchange roles By Colleen Kavanagh Staff writer Texas A&M deans have full schedules. Just ask De Lyla Alexander, an educational psychology graduate student who substituted as the College of Education deanTltesday. Alexander and Dr. Jane C. Conoley, dean of the Col lege of Education, traded places Tuesday after Alexan der won the Dean-for-a-Day rafile, which raised almost $800 for the Peggy Ritchy Endowed Scholarship. Alexander’s day began with a staff meeting at 8:30 a.m. She said Conoley’s staff impressed her. “I respect the way Dr. Conoley handles things,” she said. “The staff brings experience and expertise to the ^char^ college. Alexander had meetings with Dr. Ray M. Bowen, ol]t j s gj oac t’seasy When Wreckit ckers, s nd. Abe Texas A&M president, and Ronald Douglas, Texas A&M executive vice president and provost. “I admire the administration here at A&M,” she said. “They are brilliant and made me feel extremely com fortable.” Alexander also reviewed 54 funding issues, read a proposal for a dissertation and wrote some memos. “Dr. Conoley had such a full schedule,” she said. "I never got a chance to sit down,” Conoley attended Alexander’s educational statistics class and researched two questions in Evans Library. Conoley also met four of Alexander’s professors for lunch. “I enjoyed talking to professors today,” she said. “I don’t get to meet with them very often because I am usually in meetings or my office all day.” Conoley said she went to the MSC, drank coffee, read The Battalion and watched students for an hour. “It was fun to trade places for the day and get to do something different,” Conoley said. “I really enjoyed being a student.” He’s not Snot the tall.
