Letter from Curtis Childers regarding tonight's forum There is a racial problem on ss campus. If you do not agree with me, then I it you to come to 206 MSC fight at 8:30 p.m. to tell me. If you do believe me, then I want y to come to 206 MSC tonight to part of figuring out what we, as udents, can do about it. Our leader- ip is so important right now. There are many parties on cam- 5 who are concerned about the ef- !s of Hopwood and minority enroll- . There are a lot of different inions about the diversity issue rdthe admissions problems. These important concerns, but tonight will not be addressing them, night we will be talking about how ensure that all students on cam- isgeta quality “Aggie" experience 'lie they are here on campus. Facts tell us that minority in volvement in historical traditions at A&M is low. To me, that means that there are some students who are are not getting the quality experi ence that they should while they are here. Some students do not feel welcome at this University or in Aggie traditions. That’s a problem. Who’s to blame? I suppose there are two right answers: every one and no one. We have all set tled into a system that does not appeal to all students. “Highway 6 runs both ways” is not a response I will tolerate. Instead, it is time Ag gies, as keepers of tradition, make an effort to include everyone. The racial problem here is not iso lated from the rest of society. In many places in our country, races are still segregated in living areas, economic status and social class. This is not the issue. The problem comes when people, through ignorance, do not learn how to work with people of oth er races because of natural or creat ed separations. In society, ignorance manifests itself into racism of all sorts, overt and subtle, conscious and unconscious. We can not change the law. We can not change all society. But we can lessen our ignorance. I am calling leaders across campus to lead in that cause. You owe it to your University to help make a difference. I can not think of another function that needs the spirit of the 12th Man more. Two-percenter. I hate that name, but it has never been more appropri ate than for non-involvement in this is sue. It is your issue. It is your A&M. It is your team. Suit up Ags, we do not want to run out of time. — Curtis Childers Student Body President Graduating Seniors Are invited to attend an Information Session With the ARCHON GROUP Company Overview Archon Group, a majority-owned subsidiary of Goldman, Sachs & Co., is a full service commercial mortgage loan and real estate investment management company with over $10 billion under management.
